Symphony the Musical Note

She could still feel the sting of the insults and grumbles that she couldn't hear.

Even without hearing though, she had known what the others said. In a colony where skill was everything, being born deaf had been an insurmountable disadvantage for Volume. She had been forced to watch helplessly as the other pets took on her share of the work, never being able to help herself, because of her condition.

Then one day, it was just too much. She got her things and headed for the door, so to speak. She left her family and her life behind and tried to make do on her own. For days, she wandered, throat parched and stomach rumbling, never knowing which way to turn. Dark branches hung over the path in the forest and thorny vines grew up and blocked her way. Shadows obscured much of the road in front of her and often she felt she was going forward blind and deaf. The torrential downpour only served to increase her misery and Volume was reduced to a state of destitution, barely able to continue.

As she found herself at a crux, almost ready to admit defeat, a slow, melodious tune reached her ears. Her heart ached at the lament for lost love, but it also jumped for she found, for the first time, that she could hear. Volume rushed forward and saw a downcast metal Kumos singing softly. When she approached, the Kumos raised her head.

"Hello."

Volume shook her head, because she could not hear the words. She knew the Kumos had spoken by the movement of her mouth, but the words were lost to her. She tried to sign to the Kumos, who seemed baffled by her movements. At last, Volume pantomimed singing and the Kumos appeared to understand.

"You want me to sing?" she said, adding a soft melody to her words.

At last! Volume could hear her words again. She nodded vigorously. In time, the Kumos came to understand that Volume could only hear her when she sang. The Kumos introduced herself as Rotary and beckoned for Volume to follow her into the forest. As they walked, Rotary sang the tale of how she had left her home and joined a group of pets with similar life stories. Just as she was finishing her narrative, they came to a clearing where many pets were preparing for lunch. Volume could see many who had visible differences and the rest, she assumed, had ones like her own - unseen but just as present.

"I'm sure we can find someone hear who knows sign as well. What do you say, are you with us?"

Volume could only nod.
