Being inside the house did not suit Auriette. Everyday, she gazed outside her window that viewed the lush forest behind the house. She longed to be with nature, instead of wearing poofy dresses. But most of all, she longed to be with the fire-colored fox. The fox came everyday from the forest and looked at Auriette through the curtained window with its emerald eyes. Its look seemed to say, When will you come? One night, Auriette saw the fox, who walked back into the forest, beckoning her. Auriette quickly changed her clothes and raced out to the yard. She ran into the forest, after the fox. She seemed to know where to run, into the forest. In the morning, the fox was waiting patiently next to her when she woke up on the forest floor. The fox's look now said, Thank you for coming. Auriette cast away her domestic name and changed it to something more connected to nature. Aspen. She then learned the harsh yet beautiful ways of the forest. And she carved herself a mask to be with her companion, the fox. She grew skillful, but nothing could have prepared her for what was next...
