We lived at the edge of the Earth.

I remember my tiny claws sinking into the soft rock at the tip of the cliff, knocking pebbles off to watch them tumble into the fog below. It was exhilerating and terrifying, but the fear never reached my heart with mom nearby.

She was the most beautiful creature I'd ever seen. Her long, strong body was the color of cerulean night and her fur gleamed in the moonlight. Her mane was like a wall of golden fire streaking down her back and ending in a conflagration at the end of her tail. But even more mesmerizing were the magma opals she called her eyes. They were always smouldering, eminating a soft, warm light.
When she looked at you, it calmed the soul, comforted the heart.

I think that's what I miss most about her... the way she looked at me. I knew I was worth something when she gazed into my smiling topaz eyes. I felt whole with her.
We used to lay on top of the world, nestled in waving grasses, and watch the stars together. She would tell me the stories of fallen warriors and love-struck fools who lived on in constellations. She said that every creature eventually earned a spot in the glittering sky.

That's where I think she is now.

There's a string of flame-tinted stars that I find every night. I know that it's her because when I look up into those amber sparkles, I feel like I'm whole again.
