Viral is a beastman - being a combination of human and animal DNA, created by a man named Lordgenome.

Lordgenome uses his beastmen, in an attempt, to eradicate all humankind off of the planet's surface. With global control, he forced the humans underground; which humans need to dig tunnels in order to survive. Any human who attempt to resurface would be penalized with death and run the risk of exposing the location of their loved ones. The humans who do live above ground are called the "Rebel Forces", who fight against his Beastmen army.

Viral is a member of the Human Execution Squad (one of the 4 divisions, that is). Not only is he an excellent ground fighter with his cleaver, but he also pilots a large gunman (a mech) named the Enki. He has a hatred of humanity to the point he calls humans, "Naked Apes"
One of his biggest personality traits isn't just his arrogant behavior, but he holds the utmost respect and honor when it comes to battle. He will not attack an already wounded rival nor does he use dishonorable tactics, such as sneak attacks. He lives for the thrill of battle.

While serving under Lordgenome's reign, Viral is often at a misfortune and beaten to a bloody pulp by the Second Supreme General, Adiane. She is one of the only female leaders among the beastmen and she is mostly human in appearance besides her long scorpion tail. She is extremely impulsive and when her anger gets the better of her, she ends up plumbing him out of frustration.

Viral was gifted with immortality and *Spiral Power when Lordgenome created him. He is the only beastman that harnesses this power.
Beastmen are brought into this world through experimental means, which is why they can't harness spiral power nor reproduce. Viral is the exception to this rule because how he was created by Lordgenome. However, Viral still can't reproduce and often dreams of having a wife and children.
This is a very brief description of the character. I leave out large plot points to avoid spoilers for those who may want to see the anime in the future.
* Spiral Power is many things, but is a primary theme to the Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann universe.
* To make it as brief as I can: It is a power that connects beings to this universe and can create an evolutionary shift in humans and animals. It is also the main power source to piloting gunmen. (Beastmen have to use solar power to run their gunmen, because they don't produce their own spiral power). It has a lot of philosophical significance in the series to many characters as well. It functions very much like chikara from other animated series and seems to have infinite potential, depending on the strength of the user.
