Busted Circuitboard

Technology in my world has advanced beyond what you know. People literally plug themselves into the internet, living out chatrooms and shopping online as if they were there, free to touch and browse at their leisure. Whole cities rely on computers for power, for life. The world is connected by wireless signals.
One person, with enough skill, could take down the entire planet and cause mass panic. That is what I, Genesis, was hired to do.

Take down the world.

Destroy the connections of control.

But it went wrong

----

Hacking had always been my life, though small scale things. For the right amount of course. Being a highly illegal career choice, it costs a lot to hire our skills. Taking down a small organisation? That'll cost ya fifty big ones if you don't mind.

Taking down the world network, now that was something entirely different. I don't know how they found me, but they came to me at night, broke into my apartment and held a gun to my head. Told me I'd do it, or I'd die.

It started off pretty simple. Getting into the main system for the city wasn't so bad, it was just a matter of moving up through the ranks from there. I slowly began the climb, first the city, then the county, then the country.

It was here that I hit a problem.

And it began to tear me apart

----

Somehow, somewhere along the line, someone found me.

Instead of me taking them down, they took me down. They sent a virus to eat away through my system, which very quickly disconnected me. Yet, somehow, it found a way to enter my mind. I suppose now I had been too connected with what I had been doing, my mind and my work had been one, as it ate its way through my files, it slowly corrupted my mind too.

At first I didn't notice, shut down my computer, gave up for the night and went to sleep.

I slowly turned into a monster while I slept

----

The first changes I noticed were my eyes, they seemed to shrink down to tiny little rings of brilliant green, surrounded by endless black. Terrified, I couldn't look at myself in the mirror. Next came the pain, the horrific, unbearable headaches that had me bed bound, unable to open my eyes.

There were blackouts, I couldn't remember anything. I'd wake up on the roof of my apartment block, burning with rage and hunger, clouded by confusion. At times it was hard to move and it felt like there was something moving under my skin. It was like being electrocuted at a low voltage, I'd bite and scratch until my arms and legs would bleed.

And still it continued

----

The first serious physical change was what scared me the most. I had no where to turn, no one to go to for help, all I could do was sit and watch. The only way I can describe it, I became corrupted. Parts of me seemed to break away, float around me like smoke, twisting and curling, a pale grey. Dribbles of silver ran from my eyes, staining me with permanent shimmering tears. My features became more sharp, more evil.

Worst of all, it burned like fire being dragged across my skin, under my skin, through my mind.

I couldn't think straight, I forgot things constantly, found it hard to control my own emotions and movements. Like something had truly taken over me.

And it was hungry

----

I woke up to a news story on the radio. There'd been a horrible murder during the night, the victim half eaten, their brain and eyes removed. There was blood everywhere in my apartment, all over my hands, my face, in my mouth. I gagged, disgusted, had I done this?

I couldn't remember anything from the night before, there was another ache to the usual pains I felt, as if I'd been running. Yet something within me felt satisfied, like I had full control for now.

The next day, I woke up to the same thing. Yet, I felt weaker, tired, like I'd been fighting for hours. I dragged myself to the shower, washed off the blood, and fell back to sleep, dreading the next day and the rest of my life.

Soon I'd be caught and probably shot, if the 'virus' didn't kill me quicker.

Would I infect anyone else if I didn't kill them?

And so I killed, and slowly died, eaten away from the inside. Deleted
