In exile. I am in exile. Oh, to be among the stars when all the things I love are on a tiny blue sphere thousands of light-years away. The quasars do not offer me comfort, the white dwarves ignore me, the red giants threaten to swallow me, the neutron stars carry on as usual.
It was mercy. After centuries of pillaging and colonizing, the Empire wanted atonement. But god knows atonement is easy when you rule countless planetary systems! And it is so easy forgiving yourself when you are the law of the land. Of course, they painted themselves as conscientious, since they were the only empire that adopted such a progressive policy. Coincidentally, they were also the only empire wealthy enough to afford such an enlightened policy inspired by ancient ideals.
Yes, they sealed me, is it not ironic they gave their best efforts to forever immortalize a criminal so that...he...it...I..can suffer forever?
Ahimsa, they called it, doing harm to nobody, not even criminals. So what did they do instead? Cast them out, floating and helpless, to space.
But before they left, they were given one final gift. The Emperors wanted immortality - and such benevolent rulers would do well to rule forever- but nobody dared try such an extravagant gift for themselves. So under the guise of Ahimsa they gave experimental...elixirs to those travelers, as one final act of mercy. And of course those starbound souls were to be monitored...just to check that they don't come to harm. And if they do, well, euthanasia will ensure they don't suffer too long.
I can orbit a sun forever. I am the satellite that nobody wants. Yet it is only early in my exodus!
The results were predictable. There were a few unfortunate casualities, but as the elixirs improved, immortality did seem imminent.
But the Empire eventually crumbled, taking the secret of immortality with them.
So now there was nobody left to monitor these immortal travelers. They float on, awaiting a greedy civilization to discover their secret to immortality and collapse into madness - oh did anyone consider what loneliness it is to live forever?
The last frontier is really just a vast prison. To be immortal and lost among the stars is truly one of the greatest curses ever known.
