a Callous world for a gentle heart

"So, Casy. What do you think of that monster hunter coming to town?"

"Mmm," Casy (Casimir to his late mother) Surgeon replied, not because he didn't have an opinion but because he didn't want to nick his elderly client's neck. He drew the razor carefully down the old man's cheek, held it with perfectly steady fingers against the papery skin of his throat, his hand working carefully. The monster hunter... Once his work was done, his mind immediately began racing with thoughts and possibilities. That was a career! The young man stepped back gingerly to survey his work. The next step back brought his heel kicking against heavy dog flank, and Casy yelped as he tripped on it. His big mastiff scrambled to get up, huffing indignantly, while his owner scrambled to keep his feet on the floor and his razor in his hand. The elder man grabbed his left arm and steadied him, crying "Woah, lad!" Casy laughed a little because he was so embarrassed.

"How is it yeh can have such a steady arm and such a wanderin' mind, boy?"

"I was just wondering the same thing," he sighed, smiling self-effacingly. His mastiff stared at him balefully, seeming to ask what he did to deserve his master's treachery.

"Well," His old family friend replied with a glint in his wizened old eyes, "don't wonder too hard. Might cut yer own throat next time."

Casy coughed and shifted his feet. It was always like this, any time he tried talking to anyone, a patron or patient or girl or anyone. The looks they all gave him didn't help, either. Like it was to be expected that he'd turned out just a little bit off. He could practically hear the men, the ones he'd attended school with, and their fathers, telling drunken stories about his family. His father probably among them, too, probably passed out on a table in the back room. The women gossiping behind closed doors. Everyone treating him like one of the glass figurines traders and artisans sometimes brought through the village square. Was it any way to live? Some days he mourned his dependence on the village, and its on him. It wasn't his fault that he was a little different. So he'd become a little reclusive and applied himself to his studies rather than waste away in a tavern after...

He noticed that the old man was looking at him with a mixture of expectation and amusement, daubing his neck with a clean white cloth he'd had to help himself to.

"Oh." Casy said. He readjusted his slipping glasses, was painfully aware of the differences between him and a Hunter, felt inadequate to even talk about him. "The hunter. Well ... it's certainly interesting, isn't it?"

"Mmm. With the sorts of infestations we got in them woods, he can't do no harm, can he? Still, heard he's a young fella. Think he'll be alright?"

Young? That was interesting. The only hunters Casimir had ever seen had been big and bestial themselves. "Of course he will be. If anything happens... Well, I'm here."

The old man laughed again. "Think yeh can reattach a hand that's in a monster's belly, do ye?"

Casy laughed too, really laughed while his mind started racing. He was already looking for his pen and paper. The handless hunter... Got to check the splint on the Baker boy's arm, he thought, but that was two hours away, his next appointments further off than that. He saw the old man out, and as they were trading parting words he thought, that will be plenty of time to get started.
