From the Assyrian warriors

Tossing a gold sun relic into my treasury, I close the door and stalk away from it. The gold chains around my ankles, neck, and waist make soft chiming noises as I walk around my castle.

I've conquered many lands now, and acquired what treasures they had to give, gold being my favorite thing to collect. But now that I've stretched my empire as far as I can while still being capable of ruling all my lands, I've noticed a change in the atmosphere.

I see it in the townspeople, when they pass by my front gate. I'm sure they're looking up longingly, hoping to see inside my treasury. They want to run their hands over the shine of the gold. Over my gold. How dare they have those thoughts!

For a while, I had such traitorous individuals sent to the guillotine, but my servants slowly turned on me too. I saw that the corridor leading to the treasury was walked far more than any other one in the castle. The floor outside the door was always clean, the walls free of cobwebs and dust. I'm sure the servants used their jobs as an excuse to inhale the delicious scent of gold.

So I had no choice but to send them all away.

Though dust is creeping over my castle, and it badly needs tending to, at least none of those spies for the enemy can peek inside at my most valuable possessions.

Now, I only have my beloved Cochise. His candle ears light the way through darkness of my keep, as the fires have long since gone out and I've also run out of firewood. I'd go fetch some more, but I'm sure that one of them would sneak inside to steal my gold while I was away!

Where is Cochise?

It occurs to me that I shouldn't have trusted even a pet! Turning around, my heart beats with panic. My gold! My gold! He's after it. I'm sure. They've turned him against me. Or worse yet, I bet he was plotting it all along. Just waiting until everyone else was out of the way.

And there, in the corridor that leads to my treasury, I see him lying in a ball of dust and cobwebs, pretending to sleep. The coward! He should face his death like any of the others.

When his light fades out, I sit on the cold stone floor. I press an ear to the floor, and sure enough, I don't hear any echoes of silent footsteps skulking about the castle.

I'm alone, and the gold is mine. All mine.
