Of course, this is science that we are discussing, and money is always essential for research and development. Lab work is always preluded by grant application, audits and paperwork. Every new fiscal year brought about uncertainty and the possiblity that the sponsors would pull out, taking their precious funds with them.

But it was never about the politics. This was about the chemistry.

Chemiluminesence pulled a small, corked beaker from the line of similar glassware before him. With infinite care, he decanted the thin film of water which had collected on the solution`s surface. Water had proven to be a nuisance in this specific reaction.

Turning slowly, he padded towards the proverbial wall of reagents and selected one which was of a paste-like consistancy. The viscous green mush shifted slowly as he upended the vial into the beaker. The solution hissed and bubbled, dark green vapours shifting to a light blue hue.

The final test. The paralix took a simple syringe and drew a small portion from the vial. The rat squeaked piteously in his small cage, the effects of the slow acting venom finally taking their toll. Taking the rat in hand, Chemiluminesence injected the portion of the solution into the ailing creature.

It took time. Most things of import do, but it was shortly after five minutes had passed when the rat sprang back to life. The paralix face broke out in a smile and he chucked the rat under the chin.

The ultimate cure. A universal antidote. He placed the vial containing the precious mixture on a shelf, next to his highly volatile (and slightly illegal) container of plutonium.

It was always about the chemistry.
