The world of Caelos is loosely inspired by the 18th/19th century Mediterranean. It's a densely populated world, with no gunpowder and limited electricity (limited metals). Civilization evolved around the world's great variety of owls, ranging from finch-sized to orca-sized, from simple beasts to near human intelligence, serving as companions and beasts of burden: hunters, messengers, fighters, and mounts.

The skies swarm with owls and airships. War, corruption, and piracy are widespread - in the absence of gunpowder, war is waged with crossbows, spears, blades, and war owls. Fire, while very effective, is vehemently condemned, the certainty of retaliation usually enough to discourage it's use.

A number of unique cultures have evolved- the nomadic, vibrant sunfolk, the studious moonfolk, various pirate clans and strongholds, and the motley metropolitan cliffport cities, to name a few. A number of more isolated cultures reside in the impassible canyons and distant corners of the endless forest.

Violetta Serafini is a 17 year old aboard the airship Wolflight, younger cousin to Captain Perla Serafini Noor (ship is named for Perla's moonfolk husband, ship's engineer Osman Noor). Orphaned at 10, she was raised by her uncle Amedeo (Perla’s father) in the sky. The humble cargo vessel is careful to avoid trouble, but trouble finds them anyway, usually in the form of pirates.

Violetta's unruly light brown curls are cut to chin length and often shadow her freckled face and blue-green eyes. She prefers drab, plain clothes, perhaps in rebellion to Perla’s feminine white ensembles (the two have a strained relationship.) Bristly and short-spoken, Violetta prefers the company of owls over people; she tends to the ships small war owls. For years she fantasized about raising her own riding owl, but the beautiful, intelligent birds cost a quarter of the ship's yearly profit; still, Perla surprised her on her 13th birthday with a monstrous beast of an owlet, screaming and down-covered and already standing at hip's height. The young Shadowy Great-Owl, named Ciro by his exhilarated new friend, would quickly grow to a bulky 12' tall and provide the security and freedom for the young girl to escape to the skies.

Violetta heavily romanticizes the sunfolk, adopting many of their customs; before she was gifted Ciro, she would often threaten to run off with them. Still, she often imagines herself one day soaring endlessly westward with Ciro and a fleet of drunken sunchasers.
