phoebus aeolus

Work. There was always work to do, work that was beyond what he could possibly do. He did it anyways, and still it wasn't enough. It was a wonder that he and his younger brother ever made enough to afford their bedridden mother's medicine, their scraps of food, the roof over their heads. He didn't even have time to play around or make friends like other kids his age-- most other kids his age didn't live in such a miserable place, where the air you breathed was poison and the sounds of strange machines interrupted the night.

On one of their trips to the capital to buy medicine, he'd lost sight of Jericho. It hadn't concerned him too much at first-- while infinitely curious, his little brother was clever and reliable enough to find him again in short time. As the day went by, however, he searched the streets and checked every shop. Near nightfall, he had to admit defeat-- he alerted the authorities and went back home.

He hadn't heard from his brother since, and the guilt was eating away at him. He wanted nothing more than to go back to the capital, but neither could he abandon his mother. She was no help-- she'd resented her youngest son, blaming his birth for every misfortune that had befallen her; her husband leaving, their dwindling fortune, her deteriorating health.

When she finally expired years later, Phoebus couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. Not that he was heartless; he cared for her, but her mercurial temperament made it hard for him to love her. With nothing left tying him to the wretched city, he left to Velior, where he intended to find his little brother.

The guards presumed Jericho was dead. Though he searched, nothing of interest turned up. So he decided to travel far and wide, hoping he'd discover clues elsewhere, or a means to locate his brother...

Varen are immortal souls. They exist beyond flesh. Should their vessel die, they simply occupied another one. Perhaps for that reason, the Goddess, who had exiled those "wicked devils", had outlawed the practice of returning souls to their bodies. It was an abominable act of itself, as well-- mortal souls are tied to the bodies they are born in, and humans and fay who were returned to their bodies upon death were nothing like their previous selves. If they didn't go completely insane, they became angry or sullen at being denied the peace of death.

Jinx and Dusk thought themselves above such trifling concerns. Naturally, as twin sisters of the Venier family, they were accomplished sorcerers and had access to a number of ancient tomes (many of which were pilfered from the varen kingdom before it was sunk into the sea). The concept of resurrection fascinated them. They'd studied it for years before diving into the practical, although it wasn't until their eighth experiment that they'd achieved their desired result.

Dusk in particular had been working extra hard to make sure the attempt was successful. Though he was rather thin and travel-weary, the young man whose body they found was quite handsome. She just had to fix up the stab wound in his chest, and then if he came back to life like intended, she'd have to work on making him look perfect.

Though they had placed a time-stopping spell on his body the instant they found it, he'd been dead long enough for most of his memories to flee into the Void. It might have been better that way-- had he remembered his life, he would have been far more restless about being dragged back into awareness.

As it was, he was quiet and docile, meekly accepting his new role as the twins' servant. He didn't have enough emotions or sense of self left to protest or think about much, and while that troubled him, he hid it all behind a smile.

But he felt there was someone he had to find...
