- young daughter, around a year old

- didn't want kids or even really to be married

- she does love her husband, but she is very bored of him and their life

- feels the world owes her more than she has. she wants adventure, to always be around excitement

- pretty sheltered, works as a secretary part time for a law firm

- used to shoplift makeup as a teen

- one day while her husband is at the park with their child, she takes all their cash and a backpack of stuff and up and leaves

- her goal is to travel to southern california and live an exciting glamourous life (they live way up north)

- resents her husband and child and blames them for all her failures in life

- does everything by the books at first, starts getting ripped off and harassed as a single female. this further adds to her resentment and she starts to take part in petty theft - taking food and skipping out on tabs, siphoning gas as she runs out of cash

- it makes her feel alive

- eventually makes it to california

- meets budding serial killer and all-around terrible person joelle, who is 19, before her story. joelle picks her up hitchhiking, introduces her to drugs

- joelle encourages her crimes and draws marianna into her own

- marianna is a very selfish woman and joelle sees this and is as well

- theft, arson, lying, cheating

- joelle is all 'yeah I always leave when things stop being fun' and this girl's like ooh good idea

- marianna starts getting a bit lonely, asks joelle if they can travel together for a while. joelle is into it because marianna is pretty easily manipulated, and she senses something dark in her right below the surface. she wants to crack it open

- they have an affair. marianna is ninety percent straight but is for sure into joelle

- after a night of heavy drinking, they return to their motel room somewhere in southern california with a male stranger they had been talking with at the bar. marianna was flirting with him. they play cards, keep drinking. marianna passes out, the guy starts touching her and joelle sees this and flips out on him. the guy is not apologetic so joelle beats the shit out of him and ends up killing him. marianna awakens terrified in the middle of this and joelle gets angry at herself for caring about marianna, blames her for it, makes her help clean it up.

- marianna decides to go to the police the next day, but is apprehended by joelle, who tries to convince her not to. marianna gets into her first physical fight, and loses badly. they part ways, joelle leaving her there.

- marianna goes to the centre of the small town and phones her husband from the payphone, sobbing and humiliated

- reminiscent of thelma and louise except featuring terrible people with no true reasons for their terribleness???
