A commemorative Ribbon for a beloved Pokémon

Wandering through the autumn leaves of Ecruteak City, Jedrek stared balefully at the ground, so averse to witnessing the joy that exuded from all of the town's habitants. He used to be happy. He could still recall dashing through the streets of Ecruteak and being fed sweet berries by the kind passers-by. When he came by with his old trainer, only two years ago, he'd drank in the sights of the Kimono Dance Theatre, eyes shining brightly with amazement of the traditionally dressed women dancing in the low light of the room, their feet delicately meeting the tatami flooring. He'd been so inspired by their movements that he'd danced around his trainers feet for days on end, and then using the steps to increase his speed stats, evading attacks more than he ever had before. He'd been so happy...

But now, now that he was dragging himself through the frosty weather with icy paws, seeing everyone bundled up in brightly coloured scarves with prints of dragon-type pokémon on them, kids running around with dumplings and plush toys that marked the winter solstice celebration, Jedrek felt cold. It was pathetic, a fire-type feeling so lonely that he couldn't even warm himself during the cold months. But the memory of being in the gentle arms of his old trainer now made him feel like an ice-type. She'd ceased her journey in Johto and wanted to move on and sail across the oceans. She hadn't wanted to leave Jedrek and had been tearing up, choking out apologies, but he'd been too hot-headed to forgive her right there. She'd offered to let him remain at her home until her return, but couldn't promise when that was. Refusing to remain a docile pet, Jedrek adamantly refused, knocking his Poké Ball aside and dashing off.

He wasn't sure now how long he'd been wandering Johto alone, paws dirty and scraped from unknown terrain that he'd only ever crossed with his trainer or in his Poké Ball. So, feeling abandoned and guilty and wronged all at once, Jedrek staggered through the nearly wintry pathways, stumbling out of the way of overexcited kids and trying not to growl at them. But it was getting colder, and he lacked the will to do anything about it. Without friends or a place to stay, he didn't know what to do or where to go from here. The fire inside of him refused to extinguish; he was too strong-willed to give up, but... he needed a break before he did break.

With a leap that was perhaps not as graceful as it once was, Jedrek curled into a ball on the windowsill of the Kimono Dance Theatre, falling asleep with memories of colourful kimonos, elegant dances, and the happiness he shared with his trainer.

Gazing up at the dark sky, a young trainer made a face and said, "Looks like it's going to snow." Upon hearing a little giggle, she glanced down to see a little kid chortling to himself, and realised she'd made a strange expression in front of him. She smiled awkwardly and gave a little salute, and the kid laughed again and waved before running off to a vendor selling plush dolls. The trainer knelt down beside her Quilava and rubbed his cheek fondly, smiling when he butted her hand. "Wanna get in your Ball? It's gonna get cold."

Quilava stared blankly at her and she laughed quietly.

"Right, stupid question. Sorry," she said, and then extended her arm for him to stealthily climb up. He ran around her shoulders twice before settling, half of his body tucked into her bright red coat. He nuzzled her cheek and she beamed at him. "Do you want to stay at the Poké Centre for the night? It is rather cold..." she murmured, but Quilava made a noise of protest. "Yes, I want to continue too, but some guys on our team aren't fire types," she retorted, poking his noise. He recoiled and snorted lightly against her finger. "All right, let's go to the Theatre for a while and we'll ask the others what they'd like to do. Okay?"

She stealthily manoeuvred her way around all the vendors and bustling people, reluctant to be approached with offers of buying fans or clothes or toys. For one thing, she was frugal to the point of being a cheapskate and really didn't want to give into temptations. All of her clothes eventually got ruined on these journeys anyway. And for another, she just really didn't want to be approached by strangers. It was bad enough making eye contact with trainers. The amount of times she'd panicked, dropped her bag, and proclaimed, "Oh, man, I dropped my balls! No, wait, I meant my Poké Balls, not -- agh!" was just... mortifying. It was kind of astonishing she'd made it this far...

Leaning against the quiet side of the Theatre, she sighed in relief of her escape and allowed herself a moment to gaze upon the moonlight and the breeze rustling the autumn trees, orange and yellow leaves fluttering over the cobblestone path and around her feet. She followed the trail with her eyes, watching the leaves dance like the women in the theatre, the same vibrant hues as the kimonos they wore --

And her gaze halted upon seeing a bright orange spherical object lurking upon the windowsill. She glanced at Hyperion, her Quilava, who had also noticed the odd addition to the architecture. Hyperion nipped at her cheek, ushering her on, and she scowled and rubbed it before marching on, quite accustomed to Hyperion's adamant nature. She peered up at the ledge on her tip toes and blinked at the luminescent fur that was reminiscent of flames. With a little grunt, she climbed the wall and hung onto the vines, and leaned closer towards it. "A Flareon?" she murmured softly, reluctant to wake it. "But it's so cold out... Do you suppose it's lost?" she asked, sharing a glance with Hyperion, who cocked his head. "Maybe we should take it to the Poké Centre. It shouldn't be sleeping out here right now. It doesn't look well." She removed her scarf and wrapped it around the Flareon, careful not to stifle it, and then she flailed a bit as she jumped off from the wall. The impact shook the bundle in her arms and jolted, eyes shooting open. It took in the sight of a wide-eyed girl and a curious Quilava and began struggling irrefutably, claws out and flames bristling on its back. "Gyah!" she cried, doing not to drop it as the flames burnt through the scarf and singed her fingertips. "Hey, calm down! We just want to get you out of the cold," she said, carefully depositing him on the ground.

Quilava dashed around it in circles before sniffing at him, not even stepping back when the aggravated Flareon bared its teeth. "Relax," said Hyperion, "We're here to help."

"I don't need your help!" snarled Jedrek, stepping back as his fur bristled and the flames on its body ignited. "I'll burn you and your trainer if you touch me. I'm stronger than you."

Hyperion approached again, tilting his head. "She's not as incompetent as she looks," he said, glancing back at his trainer, Cath, who blinked at him and smiled.

"I feel like I'm being slighted," she murmured, kneeling down and taking off her bag. "Not that it matters. I have such tough skin I could be a steel-type," she said, ignoring Jedrek's snarling. She unzipped another pocket and got out some spicy berries, holding them out to Jedrek. "You have a brave nature, right? You could be rash, but--" She was cut off as Jedrek's teeth tore into the skin on her fingers. She bit her lip and shuddered slightly, but tried to remain unaffected. "Nope, sorry, doesn't hurt. I've fallen off ledges and out-swam Tentacools and was chased by a flock of Zubats. Hyperion used to enjoy burning my shoulders - accidentally, though. I think. I hope. So I'm used to this." She grinned lopsidedly at Jedrek, who stared at her incredulously.

"She's nice," Hyperion added, sounding a little more serious now. "She always took care of me and we've been together from the start. If you hurt her, I'll battle you,," he said, eyes darkening as his own flames lit up.

"You're weak!" declared Jedrek, around Cath's hand, which little droplets of blood were dripping from now. "I've been trained too. I learnt some advanced stuff from that, but it means nothing! Humans use you to train you until you're useless. She'll get rid of you when she's done with you."

Hyperion looked astonished for a moment, and then bristled in restrained fury, before trying to calm himself as if he'd done it a hundred times before. "My trainer's been to Kanto before. She still has Squirtle and the rest of her friends from back there," he said slowly. "Right now, they're with her mum, and a couple are in the daycare. She visits them a lot though." He paused here, scrutinising Jedrek. "We're not replacements. Nobody is thrown away. There are just new friends and new journeys. It just means getting more friends!" Hyperion exclaimed, perking up as he ran up Cath's arm and headbutted her cheek softly.

Jedrek observed the exchange, taken aback. Sure, a part of him knew that his old trainer had cared for him, but... it had just felt like he was being abandoned in favour of new pokémon. He never thought of it like this...

Slowly, he retracted his fangs from her hand and looked down, feeling even more ashamed upon seeing the berries in her hand.

"It's okay if you don't want to eat them like this," she said as if nothing had just transpired, and she grabbed a tissue from her backpack and laid the berries on top of it. When Jedrek didn't raise his head, she offered a little smile. "Go on, it's okay." Jedrek didn't want to give in, didn't feel worthy, but then a loud grumble from his stomach cut through the silence of the evening and Cath stifled laughter as Hyperion gave in, raucous and obnoxious. "You're obviously hungry, come on."

And so, with a little growl of displeasure, Jedrek approached the bright berries, sniffed the peppery scent and then dove in, devouring them and then lapping at the lingering taste on his lips. He froze when a hand descended upon his head, scratching his ears softly, and couldn't help but purr at the feeling.

"Do you have a trainer?" asked Cath, quietly hoping that he didn't so that she could invite him on her journey.

Jedrek involuntarily rubbed his head against her hand. "Not anymore..." he murmured, even though humans didn't understand.

She must have got something from it though, because she beamed and held up a Poké Ball and grinned toothily. "Want to come with us? We're on our way to Olivine, and then our next stop: the Elite Four!" She beamed. "After we've trained a little. And defeated all the Gym Leaders. After that, we'll go to Hoenn and surf the seas! The climate's a lot hotter there. You might like it..."

This girl was seriously considering taking Jedrek to another region? They'd only just met and he'd bit her, and she was proposing he help her defeat all these trainers and go on an adventure...

Hyperion gave him a knowing grin, and Jedrek knew he had no more resolve. Maybe he'd be reunited with his old trainer one day, but maybe... maybe he'd stay with this girl.
