Stafford was born into the higher echelons of society and because of this he was scorned by many. He was simply not allowed to be friends with those that were considered to be of a lower class than himself and the few acquaintances he had were always looking for an angle to benefit themselves.

Stafford's parents tried to raise him to their strict standards; he was educated at home by a personal tutor, lessons in etiquette and manners as well as in traditional subjects. Yet he always felt as if there was meant to be something more to life than books and exams, he would sit in his study during the day and look out at all the other children jovially playing and laughing and enjoying themselves.
Stafford was miserable.

Forced to be a loner for the majority of his life Stafford began to resent his upbringing and his parents but knowing not what to do he carried on with the monotonous regime of daily life, he attended parties with fixed smiles, lunched with handpicked debutantes and went hunting with self-appointed friends; a cycle that went on for many years.

It was mid January and the wind outside was bitterly cold, it brought with it flurries of snow and forced everyone inside. Stafford was at home with the fire, surrounded by his books, but he was not paying them any attention instead he was staring out of the window, lost in his own thoughts. As Stafford stood to put another log on the fire there came an almighty crash from the front of the house. Rushing to the door Stafford pulled it open to be battered by the snow and to notice a limp and lifeless young lady who appeared to have fallen from the sky.

Stafford looked at the girl for a while as he decided what to do, she seemed unable to move or even talk; overcome with exhaustion. Making his decision Stafford carried the strange guest to the fire and covered her with blankets to help her defrost.
It did not escape his notice that she was quite pretty.

That evening when the young lady began to stir and open her eyes she got a fright to find Stafford looking down at her.

"What is your name?" Stafford enquired.

"Alpinus. Please don't hurt me."

"I am Stafford, you will be alright here... I think we are both going to be alright here."
