As an early pink dawn crept over the horizon, Dartichu stood perched on the high mountainside. His stance was strong yet his demeanor gentle as his eyes slowly moved across the valley far below.

Those who lived in the valley had heard whispers of his name and stories of his greatness. Bards brought these stories from all across the lands and told of his strength and bravery; they sang tunes of a mysterious and cunning protector. Few in the world could really say they knew much about Dartichu, and some doubted his existence altogether. Some would tell you he conversed with the spirits and called the elements by their names; there are others who speculated he was a spirit himself, and believed he could create energy from dust taken from the ground. The stories say that he travels the stars themselves to find the ingredients for his strongest pylonics and collects blessings from the gods for their favors. His age is unknown but those who claim to have stared into his wise, penetrating eyes swear by his gaze that he must have seen the passing of the world through more than one age.

Dartichu stretched his long dark wings out as his focus shifted from the valley below to the Eastern Sea. He had used his wisdom and skill to enchant the sea itself once, some time very long ago. He had helped the elements shape the valley below this very mountain and could remember a time when there were no villages or modern civilizations, a time when everything was pure and magical. Those memories were becoming fainter and Dartichu's wings were becoming heavy. One day soon the new generation of caretakers would be born and they would be tasked with guiding the world through the coming ages. Then he would be able to pass along the task of keeping the world in balance and the darkness at bay. The calm protector knew that only then would he be able to slip into a silent existence and watch the world from afar.
