story by twocents

Peter, a small Mechanicat, ran around excitedly on the floor.

“Hey, now! Stop that.” Juniper Lynn’s light voice chastised the pet. She could never truly be upset with the pet, given his sentimental value.

Her childhood friend, a charming, sweet boy named Albertson, had made Peter for her. Using the best steam technology available at the time, he built the pet, knowing Juniper Lynn’s love of cats, but her allergy had prevented her from owning one herself.

She sighed softly. Remembering the kind boy made her heart ache. His wealthy parents had moved to the big city, splitting up their friendship. She hadn’t heard from him in years.

But tonight was not a night to be concerned about the past! Glancing in the mirror, she twisted this way and that, making sure her look was just right. Her forest green dress fell in beautiful pleats below her brown corset. The pale pattern on her tan tights complemented the dress, and her black ankle boots were perfectly shiny. Adjusting her peridot necklace to be centered on her clavicle, Juniper Lynn was convinced that she looked good enough to go to the ball and be among the finest.

She smeared a light-colored lip gloss on her lips, and was ready to go. “Come on, Peter!” she said to the Mechanicat. Just as excited as she was, the eager pet pranced after her.

They entered the grand ballroom for the Atebus Masquerade dance. Her mask was firmly on her face, and her green eyes peered through the small eye holes. The scene before her was grand. No, it put “grand” to shame. It was sublime, and Juniper Lynn felt quite small and out of place.

Subeta’s elite were dressed in the most fabulous outfits she had ever seen. Silk, cashmere, pearls, lace. There wasn’t a synthetic fabric or knock-off designer gown in sight.

Smoothing the pleats on her dress, she stepped into the room, trying to portray confidence she didn’t feel. Peter, thankfully, was quick on her heels, and offered a constant comfort.

A pale hand took hers and asked, “May I have this dance?” The pleasantly deep voice hummed through her, setting her nerves on fire. She couldn’t answer, but as the music swelled, he swept her to the dance floor anyway.

One, two, three.

She tripped to the left and accidentally bumped into a nearby couple. “Oh, so sorry!” Her dance partner picked her up, his tan hair rumpled slightly with the effort. Now pressed against into his chest, where his brown vest and white button-down shirt smelled faintly of steam, grease, and metal, they were off.

One, two, three.

The man swept her in a wide circle in time to the music, but she stumbled over her feet again, her nerves getting the best of her. She would have pulled him down, but he seemed to anticipate her clumsiness. Deftly, he quick-stepped off to the side, and they avoided running into another couple.

One, two, three.

The music finally ended, and she tried to see into the man’s mask. Did she know him? Tan tattoos swept over his pale cheeks, disappearing underneath his mask. She leaned forward to try to get a better look, when he stopped her with a hand on her upper arm.

“I recognized Peter, Juni,” he said softly.

The nickname that he had been so fond of using. Could it really be him? He took off his mask, and she gasped. “Oh, Albertson!”

She heart rapidly beat against her ribcage, reawakened by old feelings. He leaned down to her, and she melted in his embrace.
