♥️ Suffer the Little Children ♥️

In 1968, Bill Baldini, a local CBS reporter from Pennsylvania, made a 5-part television series highlighting the plight of the residents kept in Pennhurst Asylum (originally named the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic). His expose, called 'Suffer the Little Children', shocked the nation, and led the way to an investigation of the care given to the residents.

By the late 1960's, Pennhurst had been open for almost fifty years, housing nearly three thousand patients, most of which were children. The isolation and abuse caused many of the residents to regress further, instead of being rehabilitated by the institution.

Terry Lee Halderman, a previous resident at Pennhurst, filed a lawsuit on behalf of all the residents in 1977, after her release from the asylum. Sadly, while the The District Court ruled that conditions in Pennhurst were not acceptable, her case was ultimately vacated by the Supreme Court. It wasn't until 1983 that nine employees were found guilty of charges ranging from slapping and beating patients (including some in wheelchairs) as well as arranging for patients to assault each other. The asylum was finally closed in 1987.

In 2010, the administration building at Pennhurst was renovated and reopened as the Pennhurst Asylum Haunted House. The attraction, despite being a success, is extremely controversial among the local residents, and many who had connections with Pennhurst.

You can read more about Pennhurst and it's history here.
