"HE SAID UNTO ME: it is done.

a hundred and eighty-one years before you were born, the bombs fell.

they call it the great war. the big one, the last one, the one that ended everything. it's impossible to tell just who started it - but after all this time, does it even matter? it certainly doesn't matter to you. no matter who pressed the button first, no matter who pushed the button last, it all ended the same way. the stories play out the same. humanity dies in that burning light and later, it rises from the ashes. civilizations, slowly, rise from the irradiated ground and almost impossibly, life goes on.

you end up in a vault.

you weren't born there - you don't realize this until later (until it's too late), but vault 101 was the only home you remembered. it was small and cramped, the fluorescent lights burn everything in white, and everyone knows everything about everyone else. the overseer lingers over the vault like a puppet-master, pulling the strings of all the occupants. but you, and your father, are the anomalies. you are the wildcards in his otherwise safe, predictable deck. james does his best to raise you - he teaches you how to handle a gun, how to handle yourself. he is a good father and he loves you, but you are not his first love.

you are not even his second.

when you are nineteen, your father leaves the vault. your best friend is nudging you awake, the blaring sirens in the background making it hard to hear her. your father has left the vault - impossible to do, the vault is sealed, sealed forever - and soon you have no choice but to follow him.

your vault suit is spotted with blood (and only some of it is yours), you grip your bb gun tightly with shaking hands, and when the door finally opens, the sunlight blinds you.

i am alpha and omega, the beginning and the end.

nothing your father taught you prepared you for this.

the history books lied, the overseer lied. there was a world out here. it is dust and tumbleweeds, yes, but underneath it, there is life. time marched on, irradiated and sun-bleached, and out of the ruins people rebuilt and grew. fate guides your stumbling, unsteady steps and soon you're passing through the gates of a town called megaton. as you pass, the robot chirps at you - the bomb is perfectly safe, we promise - and there's barely enough time to process that before the sheriff is laying down the law. he's a good man and he likes you well enough after you disarm the bomb the city was built around, and he even gives keys to an empty house.

even with the friendly faces of megaton (and the not-so-friendly faces), the adjustment period is hell.

it is a completely different world out here. everything seems foreign to you, alien as you struggle to cope. you quickly learn what a ghoul is, you learn to pocket every bottle cap you come across, and rad-x becomes your new best friend. the learning curve is a bitch and you get some nasty scars for your efforts, but before long, you find your stride and settle down into your new path. it comes naturally and before long, you're doing some odds and ends favors for the locals.

the man on the radio calls you the lone wanderer one night, and the next morning you begin the search for your father.

i will give unto him that is athirst of the water of life,

it is a long, long road. it's not always unpleasant, you think, camping out under the night sky, your back to a dying fire and your hands wrapped easily around your pistol. next to you the dog shifts and sneezes, twisting around in his sleep. he is your only companion on this journey - that has taken you from one end of the capital wasteland to the other, and back again. you've met many on your way, some you consider friends and some more than that.

you've also made enemies in your short time out in the wastes, those who disapprove of your actions and how you do them. there's a tattered page stuffed into your back pocket, a contract issued for your death. it doesn't matter. you have a mission - one that evolves from finding dad, to getting answers, before finally settling on: finishing the job.

that stupid bible verse he told you, the one that was your mothers favorite, echos in your mind even as boots clank against the gangway. you hate this room, you hate this memorial, and it's so hard to look away from the pane of glass your father died against. but you manage. you've come this far, after all - your miles are almost up.

your mothers prerecorded voice, garbled by static, plays from your pip-boy. you think of the places you've been: a paradise of greenery amongst the dead wasteland, the untold horrors of the dunwich building, and the ruins of america. you think of the people you've met: the doctor who knew your mother, the android who was on the run and didn't even remember it, the mangy dog straining against the collar wanting nothing more to be at your side.

you take a deep breath, shaky but determined, and your focus narrows. the world bleeds away to nothing but your objective: there is only you and your parents dream. from your wrist, your mothers laughter fills the room - it is the last thing you hear as you punch the code into the reactor, and everything goes dark.
