Hands, Jewel

The day had been a long one, but it had been immensely worth the work put into repairing the remaining broken wheels of the caravan, at least her own wagon anyway. It had taken hours, but her father hadn't taught her to work the wood for nothing when she was younger! Badriya was pleased to see that her work would be put to good use, especially now that she had even been given her favorite ox, Buford, as her father had managed to purchase another for his own, larger wagon. Patting the ox on the head gently, Badriya giggled when he blew in her face before he returned to grazing slowly. They had a long day's travel ahead of them, as it always was after losing one of the gypsy band; unfortunately, it had been her own brother that had been stolen away.

But the sorrow, while still very much in her heart, had eased with the funeral and their dancing to send Raymond off to the afterlife; he was better off, Badriya had told herself over and over again. There would be no use to mourn him any longer if his soul was safe and out of the harmful trials here where so much destruction, so much hatred just seemed to boil over continuously. It was dangerous here, and the young boy had not been spared of the pain that had taken him away so violently. Smiling somberly, Badriya suddenly felt out of place here, in the caravan; she had always loved this culture, ever since she had been adopted by the band's medicine man and his shaman wife. There were many memories here, good and bad, but this had been her home since she was such a young pup and had never thought of leaving it behind.

"Until now, I guess..." She whispered to herself as she leaned against Buford, one arm flung over his broad back as she thought further about what she would be doing with her future. It wasn't until they had spoken that Badriya had noticed someone had been watching her. "You have nothing further to accomplish here, my daughter. Be free, do what your heart wishes no matter the cost. If you remain afraid of leaving, you will be forever bound here in both health and misery."

Startled by her surrogate mother, Badriya turned quickly, her dress whirling around her legs before settling in place once more. The woman she saw, though older and with hair that seemed to never gray despite the wrinkles of age being prominent on her face, was still just as beautiful as when they had first met. Frowning deeply, fighting back tears of frustration, Badriya bit her lower lip and began to chew on it. "Mother, I cannot just leave the caravan, not with winter coming so fast this year. What will become of father if he not only loses a son, but a daughter as well?" She received a small, chortling laugh in response and, having dropped her head, she looked back up at her mother, Elaine, with surprise and confusion.

Smiling arrogantly, as the woman was prone to doing whenever she could, Elaine moved closer to her daughter before pulling her into a tight hug. "But what will he do should his daughter become stricken with misery on his behalf? We have spoken amongst each other in private and wish you the best of luck. Why else did you think he handed over Buford to you? Buford is a fine animal, and even the ox he bought could not live up to your friends capabilities. Go, Riya, live your life the way you want to. Besides, who would need an outsider to help with the caravan anyhow? You and your hands are nothing but trouble, my daughter." The jest made Badriya laugh through the tears that had fallen, a quiet sob being muffled into the older woman's shoulder as Elaine stroked her daughters' vibrant hair.

Once gathering her composure, Badriya pulled away with a smile, not noticing the two packs that must hold her belongings on the ground near her ox. "Thank you, mother. Tell father I said goodbye, and that I love him. I love you too; I'll be sure to look for signs of you or father should I ever want to see you." Smiling back softly, tears gathering in Elaine's own eyes now, the woman nodded her head as Badriya hooked rope loosely around Buford's neck, her packs now resting on the ox's back and tied securely, leading the animal back the way the caravan had originally come, back to the city. "As it should be, my daughter, as it should be. Good luck in the world, may you find allies among many."
