Solu [Soh-loo] Dedicated...Caring...Alert...Protective

The morning had begun like any other - awoken by his mother, then out to the forest to help her with the duties of protecting the trees and all the flora and fauna in their domain. But before the sun rose high in the clear, blue sky, everything changed. It started with a rumble off in the distance that got louder and louder as the air began to smell of smoke. Suddenly, his mother stopped mending the lighting-struck tree she was working on and lifter her beak to the sky, sniffing the air. All the feathers on her body were standing on end as she shouted.

"Fly, Solu, fly to the others. Warn them. It's the humans. They're here."

For many months, Solu's mother and the other elders of the forest had been speaking in hushed tones of the humans and their great machines that belched smoke and cut the living trees from the ground. Solu, who had never left his forest home, didn't think anything of the stories. But now the ground was shaking with their foul presence as the woodland creatures ran for their lives. As his mother flew towards the horrible sound, Solu did as he was told and flew to warn the rest of the flock. As soon as the news was delivered, they scattered and all was chaos. There was no time to grab belongings or to organize and decide where to go. They just ran.

After warning the others, Solu flew back to find his mother. Bracing himself against the horrible sounds and coughing through the acrid fumes, he winged his way through the trees. The smoke was thick in the air, so Solu was forced to land and continue on foot. When he landed, the air cleared and he gasped in horror. The humans and their machines...they were cutting down every single tree in their path...sapling maples, grand old oaks, tiny lime trees...they were killing them all and stacking their wood on huge trucks to be taken away. And there, amid the scene, was his mother. She was perched on a fallen tree, shouting to get the human workers' attention. But they were ignoring her.

All of a sudden, he saw her fly up and hover in mid air, her head bowed. After a moment, she looked up in to the sky, seeming to hang motionless in the smoke. Solu could see her speaking, but he couldn't make out the words. All of a sudden, a blinding flash of golden light lit the area and Solu was knocked backwards, off his feet. When his regained his footing, he looked up to where his mother had been. She was gone. Gone too were the machines withe their awful smoke. The humans remained, standing there among the corpses of the trees, dumbfounded.

Solu came out of his daze and shouted for his mother, flying to where she had been and looking around in a panic. But she was no where to be seen. Looking down, he saw a spark of green light. Her amulet, just below him, hanging on a branch. He flew down, took hold of it in one talon, and fell to the ground, sobbing. His mother had used the final power of a forest protector, the power to give her own life in order to save the forest. He looked up as he heard the sound of running, wiping tears from his eyes with his wings. The humans were running away. He barely listened to the words of 'cursed land', 'ghosts', and other shouts of fear as they left. They wouldn't be back. But neither would his mother. Or his clan. Solu was alone, the last protector of the forest.
-----
Solu is the protector of an area of marshland and forests between Riverside and Veta Lake. It is an honor that has been passed down through generations of people and pets in the area. Although he is shy and does not relish confrontation, Solu protects his land and the creatures that dwell within with every fibre of his being. Part of being made protector is a ceremony said to be presided over by Shinwa herself, wherein the new protector is granted powers over nature, to help the land heal and grow.
