he’s 15 when the house comes down and he’s surrounded by ash. ash and smoke and disease and a little sister that can barely walk yet. she clings and cries and he’s driving himself crazy and the cards are fluttering away and oh god oh god they’re going to take her away. he wants his sister, his only family, his only light, and he wants to run far, far away. yes that’s what he’ll do, run with his aces and jacks and kings and his flitting bony fingers and an adorable little girl with hair too white and that’s how they will drag themselves along in the big cities and hope that someday the fortune will spill in to carpet their floor red.

he's 23 when she gets sick. she's always been sickly, but never so frail. like a doll. a porcelain doll with broken limbs and a cracked head and a little voice that chimes so brightly. it's alright though, because they have a small apartment now. not much, just two beds and a little more space to stretch in. they let the cockroaches and spiders share their rooms too. because they're alive and they've also got their families the little girl says, and he has no reason to tell her otherwise.

but they're poor. so so poor. five bucks an hour if he could work. so he takes his aces and jacks and kings and he goes to the bright, flashing city to win. and win he does, and win big he does too, but not without some enemies made on those sort of nights. he can buy her medicine now, and he can watch her smile again without pain wringing her little frame. smile smile smile smile. that's all he wanted. and he smiled as he walked home in the dark with that back stabbing money filling his pockets.

they don't take him by surprise; he knows they would come for him. he's far too unlucky and far too good at what he does to make it home in peace after all. and they beat him. they beat him up until the blood pours down the pavement and his ringing ears are screaming to the beat in his veins and his bones are shaking and breaking and he's the farthest thing from alright. but there was a little porcelain girl out there alone in the night, alone in the dark, frightening world, so he drags himself homeward and up the steps and into her arms and she cries. he hates it when she cries but with her thin little arms wrapping themselves around his bruised ribs, they are still alive and still together, and he likes to think that everything is alright again.
