- No one really knows where Kouya came from, who/where her family is, etc. She just started hanging around a certain apartment block one day, as if she appeared out of nowhere. She spends most of her time with Deva and Nemophila.
- Biologically genderless, and androgynous in appearance, doesn't care about what pronouns are used for her or even have much of a concept/interest in gender. Deva and Nemophila call her "she"; generally others tend to use their own pronouns when referring to her, which suits her just fine. If asked about it, she just turns it around and starts questioning the asker about their own gender.
- She also doesn't appear to age, and is probably technically older than she appears to be/acts like.
- Avoids answering any questions about her past, family, gender... basically anything, mostly because she finds it funny to mess with and confuse/worry people. Kind of a troll/prankster.
- Something of a kleptomaniac. Kouya's pockets are usually full of completely random stuff (i.e. bits of string, tinfoil, buttons, empty spools of thread, wrappers, bits of paper, bottlecaps... etc).
- Technically homeless, but doesn't seem to care. She'll sleep at Deva or Nemophila's apartments if it's raining/snowing/etc, but has no desire at all to live with them for real - or anyone else, for that matter. She'd really like to just live by herself, but as that's not an option (since she's just a kid), she lives on the streets instead.
- Really, really hates it when people try to parent or "control" her. Offering to let her live with them, trying to take her to the police station/social services, put her in school, etc... it's the fastest way to get her to mistrust you and run away. As far as Kouya's concerned, she can take care of herself and doesn't need to be fussed over.
- Kouya idolizes Deva and thinks she's super cool, she sees her as something like an older sister. Deva usually just lets Kouya do her own thing (while looking out for her, in her own way), which she likes.
- She calls Nemophila "Missus Erika". She likes Missus Erika in general, but frequently finds her too overbearing and motherly - she doesn't like how Erika frets over her and tries to look after her.
