She watched the sea surge and crash, winds screaming fruitlessly across the waves and against the unmovable shards of ice and stone on it’s never-ending quest to bring the world to the skies and onto the celestial updrafts. She smiled to herself, amused by her own suddenly philosophical thoughts as she sat atop the snow-covered mound, awaiting someone she wasn’t sure even really existed.

Thinking about it, she decided it didn’t really matter if he existed or not.Shivering lightly in the chill she sucked in a breath of frost laden air, eyelids becoming heavy as hypothermia began to gently hold her in rapture, and the sudden warmth of a body next to hers was like a burning poker.

Closing her eyes and leaning backwards she felt the warmth of his chest, and the strong thump of a frozen heartbeat. Letting herself completely relax as his arms folded around her she sighed, watching the puffs of iced breath in a detached state. She smiled, let her fingers slide through the threads of his bone-white hair, marveling at the way it melted away like the snow.

They didn’t speak as she slipped further from consciousness, over their 50 years of companionship all that there was to be said had been, and she felt her death should be in a dignified quiet.

She held up a quivering hand to him, and he carefully wrapped his scarred and marked fingers around the delicate bones. Her voice rasped, and he leaned close to her, feeling her breath on his face for the last time.

“I knew you would come,” A shuddering breath was drawn in. “You always do, always.”

He smiled, gently maneuvering himself so their faces rested upon one another, careful to keep his tightly curled horns away from her. He intertwined their fingers, and kissed her forehead with utmost care, shielding her from the gentle wisps of snow upon the wind that announces the fiercest storm. Blinking into the night he looked back at her to see her chest rise and fall for the last time, felt her fingers gently release his.

Pressing their heads together he smiled softly as the maelstrom thundered over them, and his whispered words thrown away in the fury of the wind.
