The House
Memory 1
Lush shades of green sway in the wind as echoes of the natives fly through the air. A house sits on a lot of unseen green. This house may seem not so impressive, but it is a castle to me. It holds several rooms to sleep in and several more to roost in. The most amazing part of this house? The doors. They lead to the wonders of the outside alien world. The world that holds secrets of past owners and the world that will soon hold my secrets. A paw reaches forward and the lush grass caresses it. It’s so warm and smooth. Three more paws make it to the heavenly yard and before I know it, my body is running and rolling all over this new place made of strange things that most of my kind aren’t used to. I now know that from now on, this place is mine.
Memory 2
Horror, pure horror. My land, my heaven is being taken away from me. I have heard talk amongst the tall ones that we can’t afford this heaven anymore and that we will have to retreat back to the old house. That house is filled with memories, but none of them good or magical like this place holds. Their words hurt my ears and my forgiving heart. My legs act for themselves and carry me to the only place I can call my own, the unfinished dream of a barn.Concrete walls surround me as I lay crying. How could someone take me from my home? This land is too important for me to lose it, but then again…what can a mere animal do against the will of two adults?
Memory 3
A leash and a ring of hopelessness circle my throat. The last moving day has come and the toll of leaving my home has made the older ones worry about my health. They just don’t understand…The van door opens and I’m pushed in by rough unloving hands. “This is not for me!†I try to tell them, but my barks are misunderstood for barks of happiness. How could this make anyone happy? “Don’t you realize what you are doing to me?!†I try to communicate again, but to no avail. I won’t give up, I can’t give up. I talk to them more “We can’t leave! This is our home!†“Why are you doing this?!†I see my home, my heaven, my paradise fading away. I will not stand for this! Rage fills my furry body as I wiggle back and forth, trying to loosen the grip on myself by the child. My head is already out the window and I can feel the freedom floating closer to my paws. One last struggle fueled by freedom and…I’m free.
Memory 4
The darkness fades into greens, blues, browns and pain. My eyes flutter open only to show me that my freedom is still far up the road. Willing my body to ascend into its rightful position proves to be more of a challenge than once thought. However I mange to correct my posture, but I soon find that if I am to make it back to my home then I must make myself ready for pain. One paw moves and pain shoots through my ribs telling me that at least two of them are broke on either side. My determination gives me a push and I continue, limping my way back to my own heaven.
Memory 5
I feel the smooth warm lushness of my grass. I feel the wind blow through my short fur and my panting mouth. I have made it. I made it back to my paradise, my Home. I drag my limping body to the center of my lush green lawn. I know I will be lucky if I make much longer. I close my eyes and take everything in. The birds sing for me, the wind blows majestic scents into my nose, the echoes of the other natives call to me and as I lay here surrounded by my world, I take my first dying breath as a free spirit.
