As Rita read the telegram to me, my heart sank. At the same time however, I found myself grinding my teeth in frustration. I've always hated disappointing my twin brother, but sometimes, he asks for things that I just can't give him. And he knows that.
"Tell him," I began, but bit back my ruthless words before they came out.
I breathed deeply and let out a sigh. "Never mind," I told her. "I'll send him a letter myself."
"But a letter won't reach him until the storm is already upon us, and, provided you persist in this journey of yours, you will already be gone." Rita paused for moment. "That's what you want, isn't it?"
I nodded, my eyes narrow with determination. "He has to realize that this is my village, and I care about these people far too much to pass this up."
My eyes shifted to the collection of tiny houses that I keep on the shelf above my bed. I'd strategically placed each little building so they were set up the same way that my own small town was. There was snow on their roofs because they were part of a Christmas collection, but that only made it seem more like the town; it snows a lot in the arctic frost, even when it isn't Christmas. As I looked at my replication of the village, all the fondness I had for my people swept over me. I couldn't believe that my brother had asked me to forsake them.
"I've been pulling that sled with my team behind me for years now," I said, a hint of defiance in my voice. "We've braved the arctic frost over and over again, and each time, we've pulled through. Even in the worst of conditions, we've always been able to rely on the snow fairies to guide us, and they've never led us stray.
"Doesn't he understand that whether they know it or not, this village relies on me and my team? We're the only ones brave enough to bring in imports all year round, even in the winter when it's the most dangerous. If we didn't, this place would quickly run out of basic things like milk and bread. They'd starve."
"And that's to say nothing of the contraband you bring in as well," Rita added. "Speaking of which, should I prepare the black sled, or will you need the white one to better blend in?"
A wolfish smile spread across my face. "I'll need the white one this time."
