Niles Nikola Schrodinger was developed by Ms. Merril Starchild as the prototype for what would eventually become the "Steamworks Kumos" model of mechanical 'pets' marketed by Yun Enterprises. Niles Nikola,(or "Niki")was the last project that Ms. Starchild collaborated on with the famous inventor, Vernon Yun before she left his employment to pursue her own research.

Tragically, shortly after her departure, Mr. Yun was murdered by his partner Marcell Martinez and a terrible battle ensued before Marcell was ultimately defeated and killed. Niki was found in the wreckage of the battle, and though his body suffered minor cosmetic damage that could have been easily restored, his amazing positronic brain had taken a piece of shrapnel from an explosion during the war. Niki was left unable to speak or perform any of the complicated calculations and data processing functions that Merril had designed him for. A replacement positronic brain was determined too be too complicated to produce cheaply and too fragile for everyday use in the consumer market. Isaac Yun, Vernon's mechanical 'son' and heir to the business, decided to find a more economical and consumer friendly 'brain' for the production line. Consequentially, the production dates for the Steamwork Kumos line was postponed for several months. Isaac's frustration with the first major production delay was was vented on Niki, who was was shut down and tossed on the scrap pile for shredding and re-smelting.

But you cannot keep a good Steamwork Kumos down. Thanks to Merril's foresight and brilliant programming, self-preservation sensors and subroutines buried deep within Niki's brain, reactivated him and he homed in on familiar signals and frequencies used by Merril in her research. Niki's homing instincts compelled him to escape the moon Atebus by stowing away in a cargo hold of an interplanetary transport vessel and he eventually located Merril's private laboratory on Oman Island.

In any system, an undocumented idiosyncratic behavior which causes that system to fail, is labeled as a 'bug'. Conversely, an undocumented idiosyncratic behavior which improves that systems performance is marketed as a 'feature'. Niki was the first to demonstrate one of the finest 'features' of a positronic brain, the ability to regenerate neuropathways and recover lost data over time, much like a human brain does. Merril was the first to observe and document this 'feature' when Niki appeared at her doorstep and uttered the sound, "I Love You..." Niki may be the first 'mechanical' to express emotion, but until the results of his Touring Test are in, the jury is still out as to whether or not Niles Nikola Schrodinger is truly sentient.
