Vegvísir
Meaning 'wayfinder' in Icelandic.
Once, there was a tourist named Isa. She hailed from overseas to the beautiful island of ice and fire. Isa mostly spent her time with her friends she came with, but Isa needed a little alone time to explore the beutiful capital city on her own. That's how she was. A pretty social loner. The young woman wandered off into streets less traveled by tourists. She stopped in front of a windoz decorated by charms and runes. The inside of the little shop seemed crowded by stuff and very disorganised. Lovely. But something drew her in. A special kind of force. Almost like magic. Bells rinkled as she opened the partly wooden and glass door. As long as she was browsing the front of the shop, there was no one coming to her aid. In the back of the shop there was this old lady, probably 80 already. She was sitting by a little forge, fashioning silver charms. the old lady was humming some song that almost put Isa into a trance too.
"Can I help you?" a friendly voice asked behind Isa. She turned around. Behind her stood a giant middle aged man with eyes like marbles, glinting from underneed his thick salt and peppery eyebrows.
"What is she making?" Isa asked interested and turned back into the direction of the old woman.
"Oh, well. My mother is a silversmith. She makes the finest silver charms and pendants in the city, with a touch of magic if you believe" The man chuckled jolly. He almost resembled Santa Claus. The shopkeeper opened a drawer, covered by glass to show off all the little thingies his mother made.
"What is she humming? It sound so... out of this world. Is it typically Icelandic?" Isa asked as she was browsing all the trinkets. Every was beautiful in it's own way. Some she recognized as runes.
"It is a sort of magic chant from the old days, like way back..." the man explained. "We believe she enchants every piece of silver while smithing"
Isa looked up at the man, her eyes full of curiosity, before she smiled. Before she could say anything, the old lady stood behind the counter. In the pallm of her hand, there laid a pendant. It looked weird but intriguing. 8 sticks, forming a circle, with each several branches. Every stick very different from the others. "Vegvisir. For you" the old lady spoke in her very best english as she pointed at Isa.
"Vegvi-... What is that?"
"Witchcraft. Old. Very old. Never lose your way in bad weather" The old lady had the brightest blue eyes, Isa ever saw. She almost seemed blind and on top that, Isa felt like she shouldn't meddle with this stuff.
Isa swallowed and looked at both of the shopkeepers as she took a step back. "Sorry, I dont believe in that stuff. Thank you for your time" She said friendly and left the shop.
