In a way, he felt silly doing this every Thursday. A few other customers milled around in the small shop while he browsed the options. At first he had gotten the more standard, plain chocolate bars and a few of the gift-wrapped boxes. Now it was easier to experiment, try the more exotic things.
He finally decided and paid for his sweets, then left the shop. It was a sunny day, cool spring air with a hint of fresh grass.
The guilt always came to him on this little walk. Should he stop?
Leave town, perhaps? It would help to not have the looks of pity follow his every step.
Ah, but adult life brought obligations and responsibility. Running away was cowardly.
He didn't pay attention to where his feet took him, he knew this route by heart. It wasn't until he saw her that he snapped out of his daze.
"Hello," he greeted her with a smile and gave her the paper bag from the candy shop.
Her eyes lit up, like they always did. She wasn't allowed sweets, but neither of them cared.
She wasn't his child, but she was the child of his late wife. Her lover had claimed the girl as his. Before the turmoil had calmed down when he had realized his wife had cheated on him, she had died. And now the little girl was dying too. What good did it do to keep sweets away from a child that wouldn't live to see the summer bloom?
