Hermione Jean Granger was but three years old when she exhibited her first signs of magic.

It had been a seemingly normal day. Her parents were both at work at the office, and Hermione had a sitter. The sitter had always been relatively nice to her, except when it came to reading. Hermione loved to read. She would rather do that than watch TV any day, but the sitter thought it a much more easy way to babysit by sitting her in front of a TV and leaving her there. Hermione grew bored of the visual "entertainment" quickly, and would always find herself back to the pile of books, her curious hands reaching up and dragging one to the sitter, asking for a story be read. The sitter would abide her for an hour or so, and then get upset by having to constantly read to the happy child.

This fateful day, the sitter had probably read five books to Hermione before finally having enough. "No more" she had said nicely, packing up the books and placing them high on a bookshelf where Hermione couldn't get them. The sitter, thinking her job would be done at least for a moment, went in the kitchen to put the kettle on for tea to ease her sore throat. When she came out however, Hermione had the box of books. Not only that, but she had enchanted one of her toys to read to her. The sitter, thoroughly freaked out, called her parents right home and requested her last paycheck. She was a superstitious woman, and was sure something was genuinely wrong with the child.

Only when Hermione got her letter of acceptance to Hogwarts did everyone in the family finally realize what had actually happened that day. Hermione's love affair with books never ended, and it payed off in the end when her inate knowledge of obscure magical lore helped her and her friends defeat the most horrible wizard of their age, Lord Voldemort.
