In the northmost part of the Omen Islands there is an ancient shrine.

Nobody knows when it was built, or who it was built for. Its original sculptors and worshippers have long since disappeared. The shrine stood completely forgotten for generations, maybe centuries, until the stone began to crumble and vines creeped up every inch.

One day a hunter, forced to travel far in search of prey, came upon the shrine. He did not recognize the deity, but, being a superstitious man, he left a tiny wooden figure at the altar as an offering. That day he felled more prey than ever before, enough to feed his whole village. He took the same path going home, but when he passed the shrine again, the little figure was gone.

When the hunter returned to his village he told everyone about the shrine, and how the anonymous deity had blessed his hunt. Now every man, woman and child in the village makes the journey to the shrine, leaving all sorts of offerings: shells, bracelets, coins, flowers and fresh fruit to appease the god. And without fail, the trinkets always disappear once their backs are turned.

If you leave an offering at the shrine, watch very, very closely. You might just see the furry little paw of a green Manchu reaching through the leaves to snatch the pretty trinkets. And if you were to follow this Manchu through the jungle, taking care not to be seen, you might glimpse her home in a gnarled old tree, littered with bits of gold and jade and clay, a miniature shrine to herself.
