The murky gray clouds a mile away from Austin spun slowly around the funnel that had begun to snake down from the low wall cloud, eagerly reaching towards the ground. Soon a cloud of debris and dust twirled across the ground, heralding the arrival of the tornado. The storm was moving quickly and in several seconds the tornado was practically on top of Austin.
His ears popped and the roar of the winds became deafening as twigs and other small debris from the dust shroud began to hit his body. He could feel his palms sweating and prayed that the empty bottle he held tightly in his hands wouldn’t slip out of them. At the last second just before the tornado fully hit him, Austin held out the bottle, closed his eyes tightly and imagined the tornado being sucked into the bottle.
As soon as he heard the roaring stop he opened his eyes and quickly pulled a cork out of his pocket and shoved it into the opening of the bottle. When Austin raised the bottle up to his face to get a closer look, he could see a miniature of the tornado dancing away inside. “Cool,†he said with a grin. Although this wasn’t the first time he’d caught weather it was his first tornado and he couldn’t help but be impressed.
Austin had accidentally discovered his ability to capture weather several years ago. He had been holding an empty water bottle, waiting to refill it from the team cooler during a break at soccer practice when suddenly a bolt of lightning had forked down from the sky and leapt into his bottle. Shocked by this strange sight Austin screwed the lid back on and hid the bottle in his sports bag before any of his teammates could see it.
After some further testing with bottles Austin discovered he was able to catch lightning, whole thunderstorms, and blizzards. He also learned that weather wasn’t able to affect him. The strong downdrafts in thunderstorms didn’t even ruffle his hair, lightning didn’t shock him, and he couldn’t even feel the numbing cold of blizzards. Now, staring at the tornado swirling around inside the jar, he knew what he wanted to do with his bizarre ability: catch dangerous weather to keep it from hurting people.
