A whirl of colors spiraled through the air. Teals danced with pinks and yellows played with oranges. Most juggling clubs had simple colors, but to suit the personality of their 12-year-old wielder, they were painted with bright colors and decorated with stars and hearts and other happy shapes. Then, when she was engaged in her craft, all of the colors melded together in an awe-inspiring dance that moved almost too fast for the eyes to follow.

Louise bent over backwards now, her cropped pink hair almost touching the floor of the pedestal she was on. She could hear the gasps of the audience and smiled to herself, proud to be able to nail such a move. She couldn't so much see her partners, but she could feel them and hear the hum of the juggling clubs as she caught, twisted, and spun them back out.

Finally, she was thrown her two favorite pins -- they were decorated with green and pink to match her stage outfit -- and she swung herself up and around in order to bow. Breathing hard, she could barely hear the applause and cheers over the sound of her pulse throughout her body. But the claps seemed to match her own heartbeat, and she was convinced this is where she belonged.

Circus Harlequin.

Backstage, the playful girl accepted her circus mates' warm congratulations on a show well done. She had been born into the circus, and it was a life she was happy to claim as her own. Her parents were performers, and she had grown up learning various tricks. She had more thrilling experiences than most 12-year-olds can claim, from having been the cute partner for the dagger thrower to learning how to interact with lions from the animal tamers.

She had seen little bits of each performer's own skills, but eventually, she found two things she loved and was talented in: juggling and puppeteering. Both gave her great joy and allowed her to interact with the audience in different ways. With her juggling, she got her own act in the circus itself, one she trained for rigorously, and worked hard to ensure that each performance was exciting and new for the audience. With puppeteering, she would work in the lobby after the show, putting on small skits, which allowed her to meet her fans up close. Originally, she had been given specific acts to work, but as she had grown and developed her own talents, she was allowed to create and perform original material.

Screams of delight and mock terror reached her ears, and she knew that the animal tamers were putting on their act, the final one in the circus. Preparing her puppets for the after show, Louise hummed a happy, nonsense tune to herself.

If only she could always do this: travel the world and make people smile. A little girl could wish for no more.
