It was a cold winters day and even in the snug moss covered cave there was a definite chill about the place. Birds swooped in and out pretending to snatch bugs that were invisible to all but them, but really everyone knew they were just trying to steal a peak at the company inside! Small creatures gathered at the entrance of the cave drawn by the whimpering, knowing what was about to happen and wanting to be a part of it.
It felt as if the whole world was holding its breath and with good reason; Anyu's had always been special to the gods, legend had it that the great Kamui himself had come down to Earth to bless the bears; giving them the name of Anyu and gifts in the form of golden bangles to remind them of their importance over other species.
At birth an Anyu would be blessed by its clan leader, golden bangles were presented by the clan leader's mate and both of the parents prayed for strength and courage, which in these dangerous times, were vital for survival.
This was a particularly important day, Reborn Anyus were a rarity among the species. Revered for their determination, fierce loyalty and kindness, today one was to be born for the first time in fifty years.
Time passed and the day stretched on, silence surrounded all, broken only by the occasional whines from inside the cave.Slowly the light faded and darkness spread its fingers across the sky.
The approaching dawn could be felt by all and just then when the waiting world could bear it no longer, a roar was heard, a flash of red dawn light crossed the sky and Humphrey was born.
1876
Fifty nine, thought Humphrey, a good age for any Anyu.
Wandering through the trees of his forest home was a favourite pastime for Humphrey, it gave him the peace needed for reflection and allowed him to work out the stress that day to day living brought about for a Reborn Anyu.
Humphrey was born old, it is why he was given the name which meant 'peaceful warrior', wise before his time, respected and always strong of soul.
As he sat in the entrance of his cave Edith came out to join him. They sat there side by side as they so often did, no words needed.
Edith nuzzled against Humphrey's chest and slinked back into the cave to lay down.
Humphrey thought about how lucky he was to have her and was instantly saddened with the thoughts of tomorrow, war had been on the horizon since the day of his birth and now he was required to act upon it.
He recalled the late-night conversation with Edith last night;
"I will be right here, waiting for you."
"I know," replied Humphrey.
Most of the conversation took place in their eyes which sang of a fervid love between the couple.
Humphrey left in the early hours of the morning, at the edge of his forest lay the plains that set the scene for this unhappiest of days.
Creatures parted as Humphrey walked through the ranks to the head of the line. Everyone knew what was at stake, peace, love, happiness, they would not be fighting unless it was a last resort.
Humphrey had transformed with the rising sun; he had turned from his humble and loving personality to confident, strong and ferocious. All eyes were on him as he reached the front. He turned and met each pair of eyes, instilling confidence in all of them.
Rounding he faced the enemy, all had blanched at the sight of his flames, he let out a savage and barbaric roar.
1976
One hundred years had passed since the day of the battle. Humphrey was still in fine health, though he had aged quickly in the last eight months. Not that it wasn't expected, it was rare that any Anyu should live past one hundred and forty.
The war had only lasted for the one day, Humphrey had done well and Kamui the God had smiled on him. Peace was here until the end of days and the power of the Reborn Anyu was no longer needed, he was the last of his kind.
Humphrey looked over to where his love was laying and gazed into her eyes, they still blazed with fire even though she too was getting some more silver through her fur. Humphrey had often wondered how he had been so lucky to find his soulmate with such ease.
His mind drifted back to that fantastic day many, many years before.
Humphrey had always been a solitary being, as the only Reborn Anyu it was understandable. Solitary was the right word to describe him because he would never say that he was lonely, often he would prowl through the trees in silent contemplation perhaps talking with his God Kamui about the future, even if he didn't always get a response. It was on one such day that they met.
Humphrey entered the clearing where the sun's rays always seemed to find him and his flames flickered and danced appreciatively across his fur. He bent to drink from the fresh cool water that flowed through this part of the forest.
Suddenly there was an almighty crash! Caught unawares, it was quite a shock when the force of her pounce knocked him onto his back. Before his mind could react to the surprise, she jumped ontop of Humphrey and held him against the grass.
Humphrey smiled at the memory.
Ready to throw her off and attack Humphrey was once again shocked when she spoke in a beautifully light but passionate voice,
"I am Edith, of the family Onca, you are Humphrey."
He recognised the family name, he had heard of Edith and recognised her blue-black fur dripping with flames.
Edith stepped back to allow Humphrey up, all the while watching him.
"I have heard of you Edith, though not of your unusual greeting methods," said Humphrey, meeting her eyes.
In that second, as they stared at each other, the overwelming heat of desire flooded through their bodies, but it was not just lust they had felt, for the warmth evoked also carried the spell of true love.
