Once upon a time there was a goblin living alone in a marshy forest named Tod. He had a simple, warm den in a cave he called home, and he lived there with his best friend, a rather sarcastic talking houseplant named Norman. He had a small garden, fished quite often, and all in all, as long as he avoided humans and other creatures that usually thought of goblins as vermin, he led a very pleasant, quiet life.

Then one day, while heading home with a string of mudfish, he found a beautiful nymph laying injured and unconscious on the forest floor. Nymphs were not native to this area, usually preferring less swampy and more magical forests, and he couldn't figure out how she got there.Tod couldn't leave her there to die, though, and carried her home to tend to her wounds. He was a little nervous at what would happen when she woke up, as nymphs were powerful magic users and they usually weren't very fond of waking up in a goblin den, but he did his best to help her anyways, figuring he would deal with the inevitable magic storm later.

To his surprise, when she finally awoke, though she was at first understandably confused and lost, she didn't seem to be afraid or disgusted by his goblin looks. In fact, once she heard that he had rescued her, the shy nymph treated him like her hero. He was confused until he soon realized the truth. She was blind, and had been so since birth. She didn't even seem to consider the fact that he could be of the monster race. She shyly thanked her rescuer, telling him that her name was Terra'wyn. Cruel bandits had tried to kidnap her, thinking she'd be weaker because of her blindness, and she had been hurt trying to escape.

Against his better judgment, Tod agreed to let Terra'wyn stay until she felt her strength had fully returned. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and Tod had never known such happiness. Though he tried to fight and deny it, he was falling in love with the beautiful nymph. She still didn't know he was goblin, and obviously assumed he was a human woodsman or something. Though she had shyly requested to feel his face, wondering what he looked like, he always quickly declined, awkwardly joking about how she really didn't want want to know how ugly he was. He was terrified of how she would look at him if she ever found out he was really just a goblin and not the hero she envisioned.

Of course, this deception couldn't last. One beautiful day, Tod offered to take her on a picnic in a nearby meadow. She happily agreed, and off they went. They talked about many things on the way, and Tod told her all sorts of amusing tales and stories. He loved to hear her laugh, and on the way, he reached down and picked a beautiful flower for her. Although she couldn't see it, she could still smell and feel, and she tucked it behind her ear and gave him a shy, happy smile. Then, suddenly, everything was thrown into chaos. Out of seemingly nowhere, an arrow whizzed through the air and struck Tod in the arm, causing him to cry out in pain. A band of adventurers came running out with weapons drawn, yelling that they'd save the nymph from the evil goblin. Terra'wyn was terrified, thinking that it was a goblin that had attacked Tod, and panicked, crying out his name and grasping for him blindly as the adventurers grabbed her. Wounded, but knowing the humans would never hurt the nymph, Tod managed to slip away in the confusion and disappeared into the forest.

Fortunately, the arrow wound wasn't anything serious, nothing some herbs and time wouldn't heal, but the pain in his heart was another matter. He sat for hours miserably in his dark cave with a for-once silent Norman. He wasn't going to go after her. He knew that the nymph would be safe with the adventurers, she was considered a sacred creature. He also knew that she must have realized the truth, that her so called hero was actually a goblin, and she probably hated him now. He miserably accepted that it was probably for the best in the end. A swamp was no place for her, and the humans would take her back to a magical glade. She would be where she belonged, and he was where he belonged. Even if he loved her, he was wrong. Such a beautiful creature could never be truly happy with an ugly goblin.

Imagine his surprise, then, when a week or so later, Terra'wyn showed up at his door. She had disappeared from the village that had been tending to her after her 'rescue', and somehow managed to find her way back. He stared at her in disbelief, but before he could say anything, she reached out and touched his face. He looked down, ashamed as her fingers confirmed what her sightless eyes couldn't see. He was a goblin. He tried to apologize to her, but before he could, she kissed him anyways.
