If 'fighting for your freedom' means trying to escape the eyes of the Emerald Military brigade, then indeed, Jelani is fighting for his freedom.

A soldier gone AWOL, Jelani abandoned his position as a soldier in the Emerald Military brigade, finding out that fighting was not the thing he wanted to do. During a middle of a battle, he just upped and left, fleeing as fast as he could from the violence that he saw. When he asked for leave, he was refused, and forced to flee without official notice, making him an official criminal. Ever since then, he traveled from town to town, sometimes under assumed names, fighting to gain freedom from the military.

Whenever he can, he attends dance clubs and rave parties, just to get some of the stress out. Now that he's met a certain special one, his trecks has been slowing down, almost to the point where the military has caught up with him ...
