When Emma was a little girl, she wanted to be a dairy farmer, however, when she and her family visited one, her brother pushed her into a runoff lagoon (a mixture of fecal matter, blood, and spoiled feed). Emma cannot forget the smell or the experience, which has caused her to have a lifelong fear of germs.
Today, Emma is a guidance counselor at William McKinley High School in Ohio. She once was hopelessly in love with married Spanish teacher and Glee supervisor, Will Schuster and later engaged to football coach Ken Tanaka. Her only reason for accepting the engagement, however, was due to the fact that Will was married and Ken ended up calling off the wedding after Emma went to Sectionals for Will, pushing back their wedding date.
Right before Sectionals and Ken's calling off the wedding, Will Schuster had found out his wife, Terri, had faked her pregnancy and left her. For the next few months, he and Emma dated, but this soon ended after Cheerios coach Sue Sylvester told her of Will's being with the coach of the competing glee club, Vocal Adrenaline, and once-glee club member April Rhodes.
The year after all of this, Emma dates her dentist, named Carl, who she said was helping her with her "mess" problem, exclaiming "the other day he made me buy the green grapes and the red grapes at the market, and then we just mixed them together in a bowl and we just ate them. It was madness. Sheer madness."
