A cloud of dust was poised...

Astraeia left the Holiday Shop with a bag full of the new Halloween-style snow globes. Humming cheerfully to herself, she swung the bag in wide loops. Today's finds would be perfect for her collection.

Jumping around in the dirt at Astraeia's ankles was her dearest friend and pet Renjiro. Renjiro was a Phluf, a puffy cotton-candy-like thing with yellow swirls. He was technically supposed to be white, but he was typically a dirty gray, a color that never seemed to leave him.

They boarded a boat to head across the ocean to their home, which sat in a small town just below the Sacred Lands. The town, Hokori, had 326 residents, according to the old, worn sign that greeted visitors. Astraeia knew most of them, as was the way of small places, but was a bit of an outcast in comparison. Regardless, she enjoyed these outings, even if the other residents didn't understand her need to collect.

The short ride ended with a small bump against the dock, and Astraeia gestured to Renjiro that it was time to go. He skirted around her legs and excitedly led the way home.

Jumping up and down to create large clouds of dirt in the air, Renjiro was clearly happy to be out in the nice day. Astraeia smiled to herself, glad that she had decided to keep the fluffy thing when she had found him hiding in her house so many years ago.

They reached the outskirts of Hokori quickly, and Astraeia turned the key into door and kicked it open, letting Renjiro in. She pulled one of the new snow globes - an orange one with Jakyl inside - and placed it on a shelf just inside the door.

She took in the scene around her, pleased with her expanding collection. Knickknacks littered the walls and shelves; snow globes, wall fans, shot glasses, candles, and the Holiday Shop's special Snowy Village collection of miniature stores were the best items for her collection. Because there, in a thickening layer, dust covered every inch of the house. It collected in the shot glasses, and clung to the bends of the fans. It stuck to the candles, gathered around the snow globes, and hid in the nooks of the Snowy Village shops. Astraeia loved the light feeling of dust, the smell of stagnant air, and the color of comforting gray.

There was a reason knickknacks were often called "dust collectors," and in that small home on the outskirts of Hokori just below the Sacred Lands, that reason was proudly on display.
