The Hermit
A cool rain of late spring hit the window panes of Emitt’s small cabin. There he sat, reading again through the worn pages of one of his many beloved books. A sweet smoke rose from his wood stove as his kettle whistled. The pipping, shrill voice of the old tea pot was the first he’d heard all morning, and for this he was grateful. He poured the hot water into a favorite mug and over a handmade mixture of sweet and smooth herbs. He then walked quietly to his window, watching the rain fall, and waiting for it to pass.
In the afternoon, the sun had come out from her hiding place behind the rain clouds and had begun to warm the wet soil. Emitt greeted her with a fresh sigh of relief as he stepped out of the cabin and towards his garden. Kneeling, he gathered up the early vegetables of radishes, peas, and a few stalks of chard for his dinner. As he picked, a robin landed near him and looked at him with a curious and tilted head. Emitt smiled at the robin and returned to his task. The robin did the same; the forest life was plenty enough company for Emitt, but he loved every creature that paid him a visit.
After he had tended to his garden, pulling a weed here and there, encouraging small plants beginning to bloom, and saying hello to a few earth worms, Emitt returned to his cabin for supper. Placing his harvest on the small kitchen table, Emitt stocked the stove with wood. As the stove was hot, and the veggies had been rinsed, he placed them all in a skillet to cook together. Just above the belly of the wood stove, a few bundles of herbs hung to dry. Emitt chose a few sprigs of rosemary to add a warm flavor, then finished it all with a tad of salt and pepper. Transferring the humble meal to a plate, he sat at the table and enjoyed his peace and quiet.
