"Almost there..." I breathe as I my eyes carefully trace the path of my next strokes. I have been working on this particular piece for a while now, and I can officially say that it will be one of my greatest masterpieces...

"KAIGA!"

My concentration is broken by the sudden shout. Looking down, I notice the jump in my stroke. Sighing, I look up to glare at the intruder. "How many times have I told you not to enter my studio when I'm working?" I mutter almost inaudibly. The intruder looks down, pretending that the floor is now interesting. Sighing again, I begin to put away my painting supplies.
"Sorry, I was just so excited to see you." I hear her whisper. I look up, noticing the tears on her face. I sigh again, this is going to be a long day.
"It's okay, I wasn't working on anything particularly special anyway," I lie, smiling at her and hoping to cheer her up. It didn't work this time though. She mumbled a clumsy apology and ran from my room. Sighing for the fourth time, I let my eyes return to my painting. I guess today's theme will be sighing I thought bitterly. "What am I going to do with you?" I asked aloud, unsure whether the question was directed at my somewhat annoying friend currently living under my roof or my ruined painting. Finally, I carefully balance the painting on top of my overflowing trashcan and stand up slowly. The soft cracking of my stiff joints fill the room as I try to shake off my weariness. Walking to the door, I take one last longing look at my room before turning off the lights and shutting the door behind me.

I find her in the kitchen, oblivious to the fact I had entered. Her cheeks were already tear stained as she stood in front of the sink staring blankly out the window. Next to the sink was a chocolate cake with 'Happy Birthday' neatly scrawled on top of it. I frowned at this, suddenly remembering that today was in fact my birthday. I began to laugh when I realized I had forgotten this tiny detail. She jumped and spun around to see me ease into the nearest chair while still laughing without restraint. My laughter was contagious because soon she was sitting next to me laughing just as hard as I was. When my laughing fit subsided, I smiled genuinely at her, suddenly very glad my painting had been ruined.
