What was it?
A meteorite?
A visit of inhabitants of the cosmic abyss?
One way or another, our small country has seen the birth of a miracle - the Zone. We immediately sent troops there. They haven't come back. Then we surrounded the Zone with police cordons... Perhaps, that was the right thing to do. Though, I don't know...
~From an interview with Nobel Prize winner, Professor Wallace.
----------
You think you know the Zone?
Sure, you know it as the location of the Visit. That place where the alien spaceships mysteriously touched down, hesitated, and then disappeared just as quickly. You’ve heard the stories about all the people that went blind when this happened. You’ve help spread the tales that time stops in the Zone, we’ve all seen the cars parked along the inside edge with their bright and gleaming chrome while their brothers sit and rust a mere handful of meters away. You think you know how to get past the police and the soldiers and the guards all posted there to keep you out.
But do you know about the bug traps? Places where gravity has been exaggerated so much that it will pull you in and pin you to the ground? This isn’t a crushing death; it’s a slow painful dehydrating death. What about the fine wisps of spider web that smoke and burn when you touch them? Have you ever even heard about the slime that seeps through your skin at the slightest touch and eats up your bones?
What about the meatgrinder?
That’s what I thought. No, you don’t know the Zone.
That’s why you need me, a stalker. I’ll guide you through, for a price, I’ll get you where you want to go and I’ll guide you back. It’s not without its dangers and I make no guarantee that everyone who leaves will certainly return but I’ll do my best. Just listen to what I say, follow every command without hesitation and maybe, just maybe, we’ll live to see the payoff.
