I remember when I bought the farmhouse. It was early spring and I was looking for a cheap out-of-the-way place to focus on my art. I have been painting since childhood but my parents insisted I join the family business and become a lawyer despite my inability to so much as follow an episode of Matlock. After almost two years of trudging through law school, I dropped out, much to their horror. They proclaimed they were cutting me off until I "came to my senses" which I couldn't care less about. I had a day job to fall back on and friends who were more than happy to lend me a guest room, basement or couch.

Five years later I had finally accumulated enough savings and found a two-story house about an hour outside of town. It sat on twenty-five acres of unkempt land and was surrounded by a wooded area. The house itself was run down in areas but was livable, even the utilities worked. For the asking price, it was an absolute steal. I made an offer and the seller accepted it on the spot.

As we sat down to finalize the deal he proceeded to recite an extensive list of things that needed fixing and how I would be responsible for them. It was nothing I didn't already know but I was still surprised at his forwardness. Just before I could touch my pen to the paper he stopped me.

"One more thing," He then looked me dead in the eye and said with the tone of a hardened military drill sergeant, "make sure you STAY AWAY FROM THE BARN."

Barn? I hadn't seen any barn on the property. For some reason, I didn't ask about it other than "What's wrong with the barn?"

"It.... just ain't safe," he answered, a slight quiver in his voice.

I didn't ask him to elaborate and simply promised I would avoid the unknown building before signing on the dotted line.

That weekend I was fully moved in which wasn't saying much since I only had a few boxes of clothes, toiletries and supplies I took out of storage and a friend even gave me a couch complete with a hide-a-bed. I didn't mind the overall lack of furniture as I had no intention of hosting any get-togethers. The internet was installed quickly but was spotty and tended to die during storms but I rarely used it other than to check email or browse art sites. Despite my love of my craft I had yet to post anything myself.

The former dining room was made into my main studio as it was the largest room in the house with large windows that let in plenty of natural light with space for my drawing desk as well as my art shelves.

Over a week later and I was settled in but I can't say it was that easy. It wasn't that I had trouble moving all the furniture or putting things away but I was getting easily distracted as if there was a tug at me to go outside. I ignored it as long as I could, using my moving-in to keep busy. Once everything was in its placeI would be working on something only to suddenly find myself staring out the large picture window facing the barn.
