"Get in there, whelp!" Yelling and loud banging from the iron bars slamming against the concrete walls rang in the ears of the broken. An older gentleman with a few peons stood in front of a doorway, wielding guns and peering down at the freezing ground.
"You did good today, Lanfan. Three targets are already off our list. It's a damn shame we'll have to get rid of the evidence," the man sneers towards the creature. He tosses his rifle over his shoulder and slams the cage door shut, locking it tightly. Whimpering from the shadows dances lightly down the hall. Others join in, a chorus begins.
"Lanfan?" A quiet voice speaks out from the dark, trying to not draw attention, "What happened?"
Nails on a chalkboard screamed into the souls of the barely living, arising them from their weakened sleep. It pierced their hearts once... Twice... Three times before falling to a eerie silence.
"I see."
"That makes thirty-six... Thirty-six innocents... So many..." A shuddering voice responds to the quiet one, "When will it end, Fenrir?"
"I do not know, Lanfan. Please hold on." The dirty white Mahar peered from his cage into the shadows that crept into the one across from him. Matted fur lined the entrance to Lanfan's cell, coated in the blood of her recent victims.
"One was merely a child, brother," the voice shuddered. Loud banging echoed in the distance and indistinguishable yelling could be heard. A sigh whispered, wrapping its warmth around Lanfan in an attempt to comfort the dying spirit.
The yelling grew louder as everyone stirred in their barred homes. Anxiety gripped their hearts. What was that? Who was next? Gunshots rang through the long hall, sending everyone into a frenzy. The trained killers were on high alert - they were under attack! The iron gates rattled, waking the dead.
"The hell is going on do-," a voice crept through the shadows as an unknown woman stepped down the stairs and into the dim lightning of the swinging, overhead lanterns, "Oh my God..."
Lanfan woke with a start. Her paws were warm enough to melt the ice that she bore so brilliantly, leaving wet prints on her plush, cotton bed. She covered her face, shaking off the memories that haunted her even in her now peaceful slumber.
"She is... Quite a unique one," a soft tone drifted towards the door of her room. Sarah's voice was unmatched and filled Lanfan's shriveled heart with a sense of security. It must have been her day for volunteer work. "Miss Lanfan is a bit troubled. She has been through a pretty rough patch recently. Here, this will tell you all about it," a shuffling of papers was heard, as well as a gasp following shortly after.
"Oh, Mushi, I do not know why they try," Lanfan sighs, peering down at the tiny little Lumimoth perched on her shoulder. "But at least I have you..." The critter flies up and around, gracing Lanfan with his beautiful presence, forcing the icy crystals that adorned Lanfan to shine a brilliant sheen.
The door opened and Sarah stepped in, her yellow dress as bright as her soul. Lanfan crept deeper into the shadows, growling deeply at the figure that followed.
"Lanfan... This is Luna. She's here to meet you!" The growling grew deeper as a nervous woman stepped forward, milk chocolate locks flowing perfectly around her. Warmth eased into the room, intertwining with Sarah's and giving the brightly lit area an elaborate glow.
"Hi!" Chipper. So... Chipper. Lanfan growled even deeper, making Mushi shiver and fall off into the floor. He zipped back up, dancing around Lanfan in a protective manner. "Oh, you silly bug!" The human known as Luna reached her hand forward, giving Mushi the freedom to land. He became confused at the gesture, looking back and forth between Luna and Lanfan, unsure of what to do.
"Mama, Mama, Mama!" A high-pitched, bouncy chatter reached the ears of Lanfan, sending her into an uncomfortable state. She cornered herself, ready to strike. Sarah reached forward quickly, trying to grab the tail of the... thing that came bounding about into the bedroom, but missing by a mere strand of fur.
“Oh, Marinn, I told you to wait out front!” Luna sighed, reaching down and around to pat the furry mass that hid behind her.
“There’s weird people up there, Mama…” the icy white and blue furball buried her face in Luna’s clothes. Lanfan didn’t quite know how to take in this new being, opting to growl in a frightened, pained tone.
Luna peered slowly back up at Lanfan, her soft brown eyes resting peacefully on Lanfan’s aura. “You poor thing, you’re so frightened…” Her voice trailed off in a whisper as she reached her hand out once more, this time holding out for Lanfan’s cold grasp. She retorted in a sharp growl, frightening the poor creature deemed Marinn. She pushed herself further back into the corner, almost begging to not be seen by the watchful eyes surrounding her.
“We were just going to foster her, to try to get her used to loving affection, but…” Sarah begins to start in, rubbing the back of her neck. Lanfan’s gaze snapped up to the sudden sound and movement, but calmed when she noticed the stress seeping from Sarah’s soul.
Sarah had been nothing but kind, loving, and nurturing. Guiding Lanfan through the countless nurses and therapeutic sessions, she has seen the deepest bits of Lanfan’s soul, broken, tattered, and bleeding still from the wounds of her previous life. Never once has she judged Lanfan for the horrible mistakes that she has made, nor has Lanfan once judged Sarah for any of her own. While Lanfan ached horribly for the care she ever so desperately needed, Sarah gave us much as her heart would let her. Lanfan let out a quiet sigh as she watched anxiety levels creep ever so high around Sarah, softening her growling until nothing but whimpers could escape.
“Oh goodness…” Luna slowly slinked closer, resting herself next to Lanfan. She gently picked up Mushi, who stood with wings arched high in attack mode on the floor, and placed him gingerly on Lanfan’s arm. “I’m not here to hurt you, I promise, okay?” She wrapped her arm around Lanfan, petting the chilled fur in a gracious manner.
Lanfan watched Marinn carefully. The bashful, squirrel-like critter hopped up next to Luna, resting itself easily on her lap, gazing shyly in Lanfan’s direction. They studied each other easily, observing every move, every breath. Luna rest another hand on Marinn’s neck, petting her as softly as she was Lanfan, attempting to reassure the both of them of the serenity that will embrace their souls.
“See? We’re not so bad, Lanfan!” Luna sang cheerfully. Lanfan slowly turned her head to look at her, still shaking from the strange experience. She rested her stiffened body as Mushi flew up and landed atop her head, patting her to ensure that she was still intact.
A spell of silence crept in and sat with the small group, easing the tension and warming the hearts of the cold. Lanfan felt more at home in the arms of Luna than with Sarah, though her heart began to ache at the thought of leaving the bright sunlight in her dark mind. Tears welled, freezing at the touch of air. Luna reached up and wiped away the hardening crystals, placing them on a pillow next to her, where they melted into their true form.
“Do not let your past haunt you,” Luna spoke with a simple tone. Lanfan watched as a small smile crept across Luna’s lips, inviting Lanfan into a new life.
Sarah nodded, flittering through the papers she carried and resting the adoption forms on the table beside her. “Lanfan?” She spoke eagerly, anxious to see Lanfan go with a new family, to a new home.
Lanfan bowed her head, a crystal plunging to the ground and shattering as her nightmares began to drift away.
This, Fenrir… This is true happiness.
