A passage from, The Dead Sea Scrolls:
"And I, the Sage, declare the grandeur of his radiance in order to frighten and terrifyall the spirits of the ravaging angels and the spirits, demons, Liliths, owls, jackals and those who strike unexpectedly to lead astray the spirit of knowledge."

Some say that God created man and woman in His own image on the Sixth day, giving them charge over the entire new world. The details may change dependent on whom you ask...

Upon creating Adam, God had tasked him with naming all the living creatures of the world. The creatures passed by Adam, all having mates, a male and female of every species. Adams very existence felt incomplete and he prayed that God would remedy this injustice.

God then formed Lilith, the first woman. He created her as he did Adam, but instead of pure dust using filth and sediment. Adam and Lilith were never able to find peace, for when he asked to lie with her, she took offense at the recumbent posture.

"Why must I lie beneath you? I was also made from dust and I am therefore your equal!"

Adam then tried to compel her obedience by force. Lilith, in a rage, uttered the true name of God, arose and vanished from the Garden of Eden.

Adam complained to God, "I have been deserted by my help-meet", God at once sent the angels Senoy, Sansenoy and Semangelof to fetch Lilith back. They found her beside the Red Sea, a region abounding in lascivious demons, to whom she bore lilim at the rate of more than one hundred a day. "You must return to Adam without delay," the angels said, "or we will drown you!" Lilith asked, "How can I return to Adam and live like an honest housewife, after my stay beside the Red Sea?"

God punished Lilith by making one hundred of her demon children perish daily and making her take the form of a black cat demon. She then launched a reign of terror against women in childbirth and newborn infants, especially boys. However, the three angels who were sent to fetch her by the Red Sea forced her to swear that whenever she saw their names or images on amulets that she would leave the infants and mothers alone.

A magic circle drawn around the cradle, with a charm inscribed with the names of the three angels, Adam and Eve and the words "barring Lilith" were the only methods of protecting the young children. Frequently amulets were place in the four corners and throughout the bedchamber. Sometimes making it to the bedchamber, Lilith would sit upon the chest of the newborn, stealing their very breath!
