He placed each paw with the precision of a tightrope walker.

The diamond that was his objective loomed larger than life on a pedestal that would undoubtedly have at least three motion trigger sensors.

Special Agent Subzero smiled his suave smile. The guys who planned these training courses really needed to present more of a challenge.

He got the "diamond" without so much as waking the sleeping security guard. He tossed it casually to Marsh, who barely caught the prop before it hit the floor.

"I do wish you'd be more careful, Agent S. This is a real gem, you know."

He flashed a smile. "I can think of three lovely ladies who would do it justice over a candlelit dinner."

"Pay attention Agent S. This is the latest in digital stopwatch technology. As you can see, the usual laser cutter, tracking locator and radiation sensor. Your partner is in with W getting a separate briefing..."

"What? Partner? You know I don't do field agents."

"The nature of this case is such that W feels it best if you and Agent N collaborate."

Subzero groaned. "Not that copycat."

"He's equally skilled and only half as destructive. I can only hope for once the two of you will keep the focus on the mission rather than the dancers at The Velvet Velosotor."

"Well...we know one thing about the enemy."

"And what might that be?"

"He has excellent taste in dance clubs."

Subzero and Nvisible studied each other warily over drinks.

"I heard about that little debacle over in Arctic Frost, my dear S. Quite fortunate Miss Alcanna took pity on you when she did."

"Quite comparable to your unfortunate evening in the Sacred Lands, is it not? The diamond thieves got away with twenty million in precious stones but you had Zultana to nurse you back to health."

"I have had the pleasure of Zultana's company, it is true. I doubt her beauty is matched anywhere in Subeta."

"Nurianna of Shengui Guo would have something to say about that. I've had the pleasure of two nights with her and I can assure you, they were quite unforgettable."

They both fell silent when Domino Biggs waddled to his usual table. The crime boss was chomping his usual cigar and looking expectantly toward the stage.

The kumos singer wore a dark blue gown speckled with silver stars, her stunning azure hair curled in the style of old-fashioned movie stars. When she opened her mouth to sing, it seemed even the grill in the back lessened its sizzling.

Biggs moved forward to kiss her hand...and slip a small package into the pocket of her dress. Neither agent missed the action.

"Miss Starfire is even more beautiful than the stories say."

Subzero didn't hear Nvisible's comment. He was already making his way to the starlet's dressing room.

Starfire got a lot of unwanted visitors. At least the glacier telenine in the suit was handsome...and impeccably dressed.

By the end of the hour, his charms and ready compliments had won her over. The allure of seeing the elusive Starfrost Village with her own eyes was no small temptation either.

His smart home was a bachelor's pad right out of the pages of a magazine. She marveled at the sleek contemporary furnishings as he prepared the wine. Beer was for boors.

Gisella, his Blues feline minion, hopped up on the counter as he was finishing the drinks, butting her head against his arm and mrrowing in a low, conversational tone.

"I am well aware of the objective, my dear. I've got Miss Starfire right where I want her. The key to this doomsday device is all but mine."

The invisible cat made a sound like "hmph".

"Forget N. He's probably back at the club, still chasing his own tail."

She swatted him with her tail in parting, a warning not to get too full of himself.

He hadn't heeded that warning once in the three years since she'd entered his life but there was a first time for everything.

He was an excellent cook and not shy about showing off his skills, inviting her to chat and flirt as they worked side by side to prepare a gourmet meal.

Starfire hit him with a stunning perfume as they were settling down for dessert. She was unaware when his faithful minion sunk invisible claws into the leg of his custom-tailored trousers and caught a ride.

Biggs had the usual fancy villain lair, the usual mindless minions and the absolutely indispensable monologue that gave Gisella all the time in the world to free Subzero of his bindings. He was gleefully blowing things up left and right when Nvisible finally arrived.

"Agent S! Don't blow the reactor! It's set with a trigger system that will invade every branch of National Subeta from here to the most remote corners of Shadowglen."

"Thanks for the heads up, N. So good of you to finally join the party."

"Some of us use what's between our ears before we start blowing things up."

"I'm sure the torrent dancers were interested in you for what's between your ears, N."

Nvisible had the good grace to blush. "At least I'm not suspended above a giant vat of mayonnaise."

Subzero wrinkled his nose at the tang of vinegar coming from the lethal vat. He hated vinegar. "Be with you directly. If you'd be so good as to stop that bloated toad from escaping, I'll be with you directly."

"It will take both of us to disable that trigger device."

He'd gained the overhead walkway. "One matter to tie up and I'll be delighted to offer my services."

He found Starfire huddled in a bunker with her two pups. She'd whispered her secret in his ear when he was on the brink of passing out.

She was an unfortunate single mother in desperate need of protection. He'd have never so much as kissed her hand, had he known in advance.

He showed Starfire the path that would take them out of the fortress and beyond Biggs' reach. "There are boats that will get you safely to the Kumos Patrol. Tell them everything that's happened. Spare no details. They'll be able to protect you."

Biggs was gloating from his hot air balloon when S rejoined the fight. Laughing and sneering, he held up something small and sparkly.

The real key to the device.

"Save the money of Subeta's investors or save the multitudes from me, gentlemen. You haven't sufficient time to do both."

N sighed. "I'm getting tired of his croaking. You?"

S nodded the affirmative.

Together, they disabled the super computer in record time.

Together, they formed a two-telenine springboard that allowed them both to reach the dangling ropes of the basket.

"Biggs will look rather good in orange, don't you agree?"

"Certainly, my good man."

Gisella tickled S's ear with her whiskers, letting him know that she too had safely made her escape as the structure below them went down in a fireball.

Subzero smiled, enjoying the view of Subeta's skyline as the sun began to rise.
