Family is forever...and that's why I'll never abandon mine.
We were never wild, we were born in a pet shop, but we all had big hopes for our futures, to find homes and human families to call our own, none of us desired our wild origins, in fact we didn't even understand what it was. The only thing we feared was being separated from one another, but we all believed that the bonds of family would keep us together no matter how many miles came between us.
...
They call me a monster and I would be the first to agree with them, if it was actually who I am, though it is not and so I do not.
My outward appearance is very frightening and even disturbing. I have great leathery wings and nearly naked thin semi-transparent skin from which I chill easily, as well as many other parts that I have yet to understand. I suppose I really do look like a monster, though inside I remain what I was originally: a mouse and I believe it is actions that make a monster and not appearances.
My family and I were overjoyed when the man came to the pet shop and purchased all of us together, every last one of us! Ah, before you have to ask why so few of us look alike, I should explain. You see, we may not have been truly related, but our bonds were unbreakable and even if we were an odd assortment of rodents, we were connected by a powerful bond, even greater than that of blood.
To get back to what I was saying before...We were so relived that we would not be separated, that we did not take notice of the strange surroundings we came to live within. It was a place of white and cleanliness, filled with strange smells and noises. There were other cages like ours, but sheets of plastic and metal blocked their inhabitants from view and our voices did not seem to carry through them, as there were no answers to our calls of greeting.
Unfortunately, our glee wore down soon enough when the one man became many and we became familiar with needles. The strange smells became familiar, the scents of fear, pain, sterilization, surgery and anesthesia.
At that time, we all shared the same amount of time out of the cage where the men changed us. Each time we were reunited, our scents were a bit different and one by one we lost our ability to speak with one another, but our bond kept us together and we understood one another without language. If anything, our differences simply made our connections stronger. The men were puzzled to find that they could not separate us and every time they tried, we would fight and scream until they reunited us once more. This seemed to puzzle them, though they eventually lost interest in the whys of it and left it alone.
Then something happened to me...Nothing too bad I suppose, but it set off a chain of events that I didn't much care for. I grew an extra tail.
The men became more zealous and I was removed from the cage more and more frequently. They poked and prodded me near constantly and I got little rest between sessions. I almost died before something else happened...I lost most of my fur and membranes began to grow in between my forelegs which elongated to accommodate it.
