The Watcher is a guide/warden over the second rider of the Four Horsemen, War. The Charred Council do not trust War so they instruct The Watcher to follow War on his journey. He directs War to accomplish certain tasks that need to be achieved in order to progress through the game. He is depicted has being sadistic and wicked, with no sense of mercy whatsoever, as it is shown as War progresses in the game. Essentially acting as a guide and nudge in the right direction for the player. The Charred Council has given the Watcher the power to kill War if he falls out of line, as well as telling the Watcher to suppress War's powers. In the Darksiders comic book/art book, a female of The Watcher's race is shown and revealed as his sister. After informing the Charred Council that the Apocalypse has come early, the seals are still intact, and that War himself had joined the battle, she is killed for having gone and personally verified these events, by stepping out of line and going to earth without permission. This may be a motive that The Watcher is so cruel to war, and enjoys having him "on his leash" His race may be a sprite, as Azrael refers to him as such in Eden. The Watcher often demands that War follows his orders to the letter, referring to him as "a dog on a leash". Once, when Samael demanded that War kill The Watcher, War showed his hatred towards his self-proclaimed master by smashing him into the ground, but not killing him which Samael believes shows War's weakness. The Watcher also seems to have limited interest in people, as he is only interested in watching the suffering of others. This is showed often in the game, such as the time when The Watcher requests that War slays Azrael for being an accomplice of Abaddon, the Archangel that started the premature Apocalypse. When War refuses to do so, The Watcher takes great pleasure in torturing him, while stating " We made you, we own you!" When War tries to attack The Watcher, he states that "You so much as blink at me and the Council will end you, both of you! I'm protected!" This happened before War hits the Watcher, as he is referring to War and Samael. This also shows that he sees himself as one of the Council, although he is a mere servant of them.
