Long before he was the hero he is today, Bochs was just a mild-mannered scientist working at Asmodeus Genetech. For his entire life, he had been fascinated with the Lab's scientific advances. His dreams were finally fulfilled when, after years of scientific study, Bochs was asked to come work at Genetech. Due to a company policy on rookie scientists, Bochs was teamed with the Jeffries triplets for his first few months of work. At first, he happily obliged; he was just glad for an opportunity to utilize the astounding technology now at his fingertips. As he set to work discovering new ways to combine the molecules of various items, he soon noticed that working with the triplets was not the most pleasant experience. While Bochs focused on engineering and combining items, the Jeffries were uncomfortably happy with the controversial biological side of Genetech - fusing minions with items (and even other minions!) to create strange, and sometimes creepy, fusions. Not only were they strangely excited about mutating the poor creatures, but they stored the little minions in cold, cramped cages. Bochs knew the only way to get promoted and earn his own lab would be to develop a new item combination that nobody had ever thought of before. After examining Genetech's databases, Bochs noticed the surprising lack of musical options. Seeing as everybody loved music, he figured any new combination would be adored by the public - and therefore lucrative to Genetech's shareholders. He gathered up every music item he could, from instruments to headphones, and set them on tables all over his side of the lab.
After an exceptionally long day with no successful creations, Bochs was ready to go home. Looking at the clock, he realized he had worked extremely late without even knowing it. The triplets were still there, of course; sometimes Bochs wondered if they even left the lab. He noticed that a cute, fluffy little minion was next on the list for experimentation. Bochs didn't want the triplets getting creative while he was gone, so, begrudgingly, he asked, "Hey, guys, want to go grab a drink and head home? We could all use a rest, we've been working all day. Drinks and snacks are on me." Hesitant, but not wanting to pass up free food and drink, the Jeffries agreed. They cleaned up the lab and were about to leave the building when the alarms sounded. The quartet paused briefly, then was about to leave until the security guard cleared his throat. "Umm, you guys might want to stay...the alarms that were tripped came from your lab." "Our cages!" the Jeffries shouted in unison as they raced off. Bochs trotted behind them, gleeful to see just how many of their minions had been freed, no doubt from some minion-rights nut. He was even happier to realize, when he got to the lab, that the minion in question happened to be the fluffy one from earlier. Happy, that is, until he realized that some of his most promising headphones had been stolen as well! He looked outside the lab and noticed a security guard chasing some Ontra across a catwalk. Bochs and the triplets followed from below, hoping to apprehend the thief, or at least catch anything that fell. Unfortunately, this put them in the center of the action when the Ontra fell into a nuclear vat, triggering an unstable reaction that cause a huge explosion! Caught in the blast, Bochs was thrown into a pile of machinery, then knocked out.
When he came to, Bochs found himself staring at a Dark Matter Dragarth. "Hey, guys, this one's awake!" the pet shouted, and he was soon joined by a Hydrus Ontra and a Galactic Endeavor. "Sir, are you alright?" the Endeavor asked. "We're the Subeta Defense League. We came to help as soon as we heard the explosion. We were told you were near the vat when it exploded, but it looks like your metal hide protected you from most of the blast." "Yea, I guess I was luck....metal?" Bochs asked quizzically. The three pets looked at each other nervously, before asking, "You mean, you're not a Steamwork Kumos?" Bochs looked down at his now-metal paws, examined his now-mechanical body, and promptly fainted. After waking up for the second time, he saw the same three pets, and realized he wasn't having some awful nightmare. This time, the Dragarth did the talking. "All right, I analyzed your matter and I think I figured out what happened. Somehow, the explosion incinerated your original body, but kept your energy intact. When you came into contact with this machinery, you subconsciously reassembled yourself with the materials at hand." Waiting for another faint, the League was shocked when Bochs replied, "Okay. I've seen weirder working here, trust me. Give me a hand up?" As Bochs reached out his paw for help, something miraculous happened. The scrap metal and plastics sitting around him suddenly flew together, forming into a crude robot with one arm that helped him stand up.
After the initial shock, it didn't take Bochs long to figure out his powers. He could manipulate and combine any inorganic material into anything he could conceive, even temporarily allowing inanimate items to move. The Jeffries triplets gained a similar power: they could manipulate living tissue. However, it came with a horrible price: the three brothers had been fused together in the blast. After helping clean up after the explosion, Bochs and the Jeffries creature went back to the League's headquarters to further analyze what had happened. They were given a clean bill of health (or at least what a living robot and a three-headed Ruffie can call health) and soon joined the League, using their new powers to help others. Bochs was happy to use his abilities to help others; truthfully, he was even more excited that he could now conduct his experiments whenever he wanted. However, he wasn't so sure that Jeffries would work out as a League member...
