Avery Aymer Kadison died February 15th, 2002, on his birthday. For this special occasion, his 21st, his parents had bought him a new car. It was nothing special, since they'd be strapped for cash, but it would get him from point A to point B, and that's all it was needed for. Unfortunately, that very same almost-rust bucket was needed by a car jacker who'd just robbed the bank on 34th Street.
It was a painful death. Crowbar to the head, BAM. He was left to bleed out in an alley, where he was only found three days later, already dead and decomposing slightly. After the funeral, his body was cremated, but not before his mother cut a lock of hair to take home with her. His parents were bereft. They blamed themselves for his death, as all parents would, though that blame eventually shifted to focus on each other. You're the one who wanted to buy him a car!, one would accuse. You're the one who said he should take it for a spin!, the other would shout. Unbeknownst to them, their ghost son watched on, becoming more and more distressed with each fight they engaged in.
When finally it ended with their messy divorce and his mother's suicide a year later, Avery was left alone and depressed in his family's house, tethered there by the small lock of hair his mother kept. It remains hidden, pressed tight between the pages of a bible under the floorboards of the master bedroom. Taped with love, it rests beneath Psalm 116:15.
Though he's only been dead for ten years, the pain of watching his family unravel so quickly has taken its toll. Unable to sort through and accept his death, his feelings, and his regrets, his confusion has made him volatile. His bursts of violence have made the house uninhabitable, and it has gone through several potential owners throughout the years. By way of flickering lights, floating utensils, and electronic interference, he's chased everyone off. From loving families, to rich playboys, and even a couple of celebrities, Avery has rid the house of anyone who dare purchase it. On top of it all, he loses himself more and more each day, and even when calm, can no longer remember who he is or why he's there. His identity is lost, trapped within the lonely, blurred years of his isolation.
Bound to an empty house by the love of his mother, he waits for someone to help him remember.
