I suppose that my birth was something akin to waking on an operating table with amnesia. One morning, I simply opened my eyes to the world but as a fully formed creature, something that had no real birth. I was ‘created’. Like Frankenstein’s monster only my mouth was glued shut and my eyes pasted open. I was as stiff as a board and no matter how hard I tired, not one piece of my body would listen to my brain as I commanded myself to move.
My mind was racing like a well oiled steam train, I was paralyzed, a wakened consciousness trapped in an unmoving corpse. I had little time to dwell on my thoughts though as my loneliness was interrupted quite abruptly with something lifting me from my position on the table. I got only a flash of the face of my attacker as it surveyed me as if checking I was good enough for it. It seemed satisfied.
Sharp and well pointed, a thin piece of metal pierced through my back twice like a knife, a length of rope mercilessly following it, roughly scraping the tender wounds. I would have cried out if I could. Screamed, yelled, kicked, hit anything to stop the pain. But I couldn’t. I was frozen in place. I wanted to crawl inside myself and close my ears to the attack.
Soon enough, though, it stopped. It was a swift as it had begun, though the dull throb still lingered. Its hands were soft and gentle as it caressed the wound, tugging lightly on the string now secured through my body. Its fingers moved to another open wound on my back. It was old and healed and I hardly had noticed it before now.
Out of the blue, I began to feel gorged, as though my stomach could barely hold another morsel. I felt filled to the brim with sickly chocolate and sticky sweets. It felt good. Then it felt bad. Wave upon wave of nausea hit me but there was nothing I could do to settle the stuffed feeling. I felt a cold cloth, spread along my back, covering the old wound and sealing my closed. Strip upon strip bandaged my back and it was easy to forget the sickness in the sudden relief.
Moved once more, it left me to my thoughts. The room grew darker first, then lighter again as I stared unmoved dead ahead, the dulled noises of stirring life continuing beyond my room. Was this my existence for the rest of eternity? To be abandoned here, alone, with nothing to look at but a white wash wall growing lighter and darker with the movement of the sun? To think constantly, to never stop? To never sleep or eat or laugh or even blink?
It returned though. I knew it was my attacker, I could smell it; I could hear her footfalls exactly like the time before. It wasn’t alone though. Something small, something fairly new, something more excited than could be explained. “Piñata, piñata, piñata I’m gonna call ‘im Jose!” I didn’t know what a piñata was, but, I was fairly sure the little it was referring to me. Arms cuddled round me gently as a warning from my attacker was uttered about being fragile.
It was warm and soft and loving and friendly. It kept me. All day. There was cake and clowns and bouncy castles and presents. I experienced them all with my new, small, excited thing. It never let me go. The word piñata ruffled my ears again as the party was coming to a close. I was stolen, or rather, betrayed as my new, small, excited thing passed me to the attacker. It strung me up by the rope on my back. My weight tugged down on the thin casing of back and if they could, my eyes would have shed tears and my mouth would have screamed.
What would they do with me?
A scrap of black cloth was placed over a small it’s eyes and a bat placed in its hands. I had no notion of such odd rituals. How strange these it’s were. And then it swung. The bat merely millimeters away from my nose, the force of the air causing me to swing on the painful rope. Again, and again, it swung. Though I wasn’t so lucky. The bat crashing against my legs and my head. They switched. Another little it taking the black cloth and the bat.
Beaten mercilessly I could feel my casing tearing, each new it stepping forward full of laughs and excitement to swing violently at me. Each hit like a well aimed bludgeon and knocking my breath from me. If I could bleed there would be little left of me. A final aim, the wooden bat connecting hard with a rip in my beaten stomach. I tore. My belly ripping in agony as everything collapsed. The contents that had been forced upon my the day before dropping the distance to the floor amidst the cheers of the its.
Again I was left. The wind rustling me every now and then with nothing to distract me from the never ending pain. I watched the darkness settle once more and my original attacker cut me down. She wasn’t gentle or kind as she lifted the lid of a large black container. My resting place. I would have snorted if I could, thrown out with the remains of the party I had earlier enjoyed. I longed for my boring empty room with the white was wall and my vision blurred to black.
I welcomed it.
