Beneath the Oracle’s quarters lies an underground temple dedicated to the deities worshipped throughout the land of Subeta. It is a sacred place, one where no normal citizens are allowed; only the Oracle herself and those that serve in the temple are permitted entrance. The temple workers are not of typical origin, either; they are only of the carnivorous plant species, the Aeanoid. The Aeanoid species is born from the Garden of Subeta, and therefore, are born from this planet and alone are worthy to serve in its temple. There they care for the alters dedicated to the specific gods and goddesses of the land and leave offerings of food and symbolic items.
---
Over time, the temple has become a kind of correctional facility. The most heinous criminals of Subeta are sent there to, ideally, reform them into satisfactory citizens. Each criminal is assigned a room in the temple where they stay. The temple workers bring each inhabitant three meals a day, consisting of only the best fruits, bread and water. It is thought that the holy atmosphere of the temple is what truly reforms the criminals, so there are no other efforts exerted by the temple workers to try to change the prisoners. They are simply left to their room to think. With enough reflection, it is believed they can be turned into adequate beings. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem as of late of the criminals disappearing from their rooms…

Caris moved through the kitchen of the temple with serene grace, inhaling the pungent aroma of today’s breakfast as she passed the stove. She felt a peace here, with her Sisters, all working together for the greater good. Caris couldn’t imagine doing anything else with her life. She grabbed a plate of food with each of her seven tentacles and made her way to the hall where the doors to the prisoners’ rooms were, as did all of the temple workers. It was apart of their morning routine to deliver breakfast to the rooms before the Aeanoids all congregated in their own dining hall for the morning meal.
After breakfast, the workers spilt up to clean the temple. Caris made her way to the shrine for Wokam, the fire goddess, and began to lift each offering on the alter to dust under it. Then she added new fruit to the offering basket, replaced the one candle that had burned out during the night, relit the incense, and polished the bust of the goddess. Every shrine in the temple had a single worker in charge of caring for it, but not every worker was in charge of a shrine. Only the most devout and pious workers were entrusted with the maintenance of the temple’s shrines. Caris was very proud to be one of those chosen.
Caris carried her dust rag with her back to the storage closet where the Sisters kept the supplies used to maintain the shrines. She overheard two of her fellow workers talking about this morning’s rounds. Those Aeanoids who were not assigned a shrine were in charge of helping each other clean the rooms of the prisoners - doing such tasks as sweeping and mopping the floor, washing sheets, washing walls, escorting the prisoner to the showers and back, and picking up the plates and silverware used for breakfast. Caris overheard her Sister discussing the disappearance of yet another prisoner. He must have vanished sometime between curfew the night before and mealtime this morning, according to the Aeanoid in charge of Room 14. This was the fifth disappearance this month. Everyone who worked in the temple was on edge because of these strange vanishings. There was no way for the prisoners to escape, that was certain, and the thought that someone broke into the temple to help smuggle prisoners out was highly unlikely (that particular idea was often regarded with scoffs and snorts of dismissal).
No one on the outside knew of the disappearances of the temple prisoners; the workers never left the temple and The Oracle was not inclined to inform the inhabitants of Subeta about the issue. It was talked about in hushed tones only by those directly involved.
The Aeanoids delivered the noon meals to the rooms, sat down for their own meal, and then split into teams to cleans the different rooms of the temple, such as The Oracle’s quarters, the kitchen, the dining room, the rooms that housed the shrines, and the hallways connecting them all. Caris and her friend Sybil, with brooms, mops, rags, and buckets of water in hand, set out for the hallway connecting the room that housed the shrine to Apollonia and the kitchen.
The two were quite a pair: Caris with her pure white body, bright yellow spots, and vibrant lavender feathers and her antithesis Sybil, with her gorgeous black body, impossibly black spots that were somehow darker than her body, and ruby red spikes where Caris had feathers. Caris swept the floor while Sybil stayed in the corner of the hallway, loading soap into the mop water. Sybil kept her eyes down and was entirely focused on the water, so she didn't hear Caris ask her if she had heard of the latest disappearance. Caris walked over to the other Aeanoid and gently touched her on the shoulder.
"Sybil?" she asked innocently. Startled, the black Aeanoid looked up. Caris's eyes scanned her Sister's face, stopping suddenly as a smudge at the corner of her mouth. Sybil's skin was so dark the spot was practically unnoticeable, and Caris only saw it because of her close proximity to her Sister. "Oh, Sybil, you have a little something..." she trailed off, gesturing towards her own mouth. Cleanliness was taken very seriously at the temple.
"It almost looks like-" Caris stopped, her breath suddenly catching in her throat. Blood. Caris's hands felt clammy. She felt the weight behind Sybil's narrowing eyes. Time seemed to stop altogether, but at the same time, everything happened so fast. Caris turned and bolted down the hallway, towards kitchen. Her own gasping breath was the only sound she could hear, not even her pumping heart could overpower it. She couldn't find the breath to call out. As she passed through the doorway into the kitchen, Caris looked over her shoulder. Sybil wasn't right behind her like she thought she would be. Instinctively, Caris looked up. Sybil was in mid-leap, hands curled into talons, tentacles waving, and grinning a horrible, blood stained grin.
Caris jerked her head around and put every ounce of strength into one last sprint. Her body crumpled as Sybil landed right on top of her. One more victim. One more meal. One more secret.
